The "deception" double-standard

Interestingly, smac97 began a thread questioning whether or not the new Evangelical DVD is “deceptive” because of the front cover:

The consensus on the forum is, of course, it is absolutely deceptive.

So let me get this straight. This is deceptive because people will open it expecting to watch something produced by the Church, the exact opposite of what’s inside. Yet, at the same time when people click on ultm.org only to find the exact opposite of what they expected, well, that isn’t deception.

Its just “parody”

I don't think this is deceptive at all...

I do not know of anything the church has ever produced where there is a picture of Christ dying on the cross.

It is clearly not a production of the LDS church and I do not think the promoters intended it to appear so or they would not have included such a picture.

Of course not everyone knows that the LDS church objects to this image of Christ but it clearly (in my opinion) does not seem to be even an attempt at looking officially LDS.

What I want to know is, why did they use that picture of Joseph? It's been retouched so many times, it bears little resemblance to what he looked like.

It's kind of like the Young Elvis/Vegas Elvis debate. Do you prefer the fat, large-nosed Joseph of Sutcliffe Maudsley's portrait; the leaner, sleeker, version on the CD cover; or the unrecognizable Calvin Klein model envisioned by the likes of Del Parsons?

I do not see how this cover deceives. Is it reasonable to assume that everything with Joseph Smith on the cover must necessarily be produced by the Mormon Church?

Of course, producing and distributing pictures of ol Joe translating gold plates to membership and the world is not deception, is it? I'm still waiting for the day when the Church publishes and widely disseminates to members and non-members a picture with ol Joe with his head buried in a hat.

How to define deception?

Easy. Deception is what the other guys do. If the Mormon Church does it, it is by defintion not deception.
