Now here's something I could sink my teeth into.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A life-size sculpture of a naked Jesus made out of chocolate has angered a Roman Catholic organization and forced a Manhattan art gallery to reconsider exhibiting it during Easter week.

The sculpture "My Sweet Lord" by Cosimo Cavallaro was to be exhibited for two hours each day next week in a street-level window of the Roger Smith Lab Gallery in Midtown Manhattan. It was set to open on Monday, days before Good Friday when Christians mark the crucifixion of Jesus.

"We're considering our options," Matthew Semler, the gallery's artistic director, said on Friday. "We're still assessing the situation."

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called for a boycott of the accompanying Roger Smith Hotel, writing to 500 religious and secular organizations.

"This is an assault on Christians during Holy Week," said Kiera McCaffrey, director of communications for the league, which describes itself the largest U.S. Catholic civil rights group.

"They would never dare do something similar with a chocolate statue of the prophet Mohammad naked with his genitals exposed during Ramadan," she said.

Semler said the hotel had no knowledge of what the gallery planned to show and was being unfairly targeted. Moreover, he said the work was not irreverent.

"It's intended as a meditation on the Holy Week," Semler said of the sculpture, which depicts Jesus as if on the cross.

A photo of the piece on the artist's Web site (http://www.cosimocavallaro.com/) shows the work suspended in air.

The Catholic League has no intention of bringing legal action but seeks to punish the hotel with a boycott because "they're the ones bringing this into the mainstream, in the heart of Manhattan, for any child holding his mother's hand to see," McCaffrey said.

She was further irked by an unconfirmed report that Cavallaro invited the public to come take a bite out of the sculpture.

Semler said that was only a joke by the artist.

New York is familiar with peculiar clashes between art and religion. In 1999, then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani threatened to withdraw a grant from the Brooklyn Museum of Art for showing a painting depicting the Virgin Mary as a black woman splattered with elephant dung adorned with cut-outs from pornographic magazines.

One, learn how to inline links so you don't jack up the page formating...

Two, the artist should have put ChocoChrist on a white chocolate cross and used some tubing and cherry syrup for full stigmata action.

Well done statue i think, even if the subject isn't of my interest. If it was done of anything else, say wood, then they wouldn't have problems with it. But since its food.......

funny what some people will have problems with.

they just had a report on this on CNN. Man, it looks alot better on TV than that pic shows. I see alot of skill going into that. I know just how hard it is to work chocolate like that. I don't really get why its such a problem. I've seen statues just like it done in wood that where praised as much as this was hated.

Why no clothes on the statue? I think a white chocolate loin cloth would have been tasteful.

Edit: oops, cross-posted with Moksha.

It's because of the schlong, people. Put a loincloth on it and these folks wouldn't be having a problem with it. But seeing the Tool of God (on a statue) is just too much.

If they were all Mormons, they'd be the ones at BYU protesting because the Indian statue isn't abiding by the dress and grooming standards. What do these folks do with their kids when they go into an art museum and see all the greek and roman statuary? Sheesh.

Well, the first thing I said was "wow" because, really, it is done really well. The next thing I thought about was how it is interesting that they chose to make the Jesus out of chocolate for Easter. Are they trying to make a point about Easter and chocolate bunnies and all that... you know, Easter is about Jesus and not Chocolate Bunnies.

Yeah I think you have a point, Twinkie. Easter comes and a hundred million chocolate bunnies are manufactured around the world, but where's Jesus Christ in all of that? Couldn't this really be a sort of in-your-face point about the commercialization of Easter?

Still, you know, he's got a schlong. Think of the children!

Well, if I were to get chocolate Jesus in my Easter basket, I know which part I'd eat first.

I hope you remain well grounded for the next couple of days. Tether yourself to a good copper cable going at least 6 to 10 feet into the ground and you just might survive the lightning strike. ;-)
