EV Kids Get Lectured by LDS Cop

An officer with a state police force has confronted a team of college students on a spring break missions trip, telling them that handing out Christian literature is "shameful."

In Pakistan? India? Perhaps Syria? Nope. In Utah. Not only that, but a second officer, this one with a local police force, confronted the same students just a day later, telling them that handing out such information was "looked down on here."

Nelson Koon, of Hudsonville, Mich., and a junior at Frontier School of the Bible in LaGrange, Wyo., led the team of college students on their missions trip, and described for WND how these two incidents happened this week, starting in Payson, Utah.

"We got stopped by a police officer, the group of eight of us in a school vehicle," he said. "He said it was shameful, what we were doing."

The team had volunteered to raise their own funds and spend their spring breaks helping various Christian organizations, including TriGrace Ministries, and others in Utah hand out Christian brochures, and in one case, a DVD called "Jesus Christ/Joseph Smith".

"He said he got one on his door," Koon said of the officer. "He said, 'what were we doing, putting all these lies on the DVD?'"

"He asked us what group or church were we with, … then he chewed us out a little. He kind of warned us, then he took off," Koon reported.

Quite interesting, in my opinion. The responses on the thread have been intriguing too, including some who have tried to discredit the authenticity of the story. The most recent post features a frothing-at-the-mouth Pahoran, claiming that the DVD uses "underhanded tactics." I cannot help but wonder if he feels that failure to tell black investigators about the priesthood ban, or failure to discuss Joseph Smith's court trial and use of a seer stone are also "underhanded tactics."

Hey MS--

These tidbits are actually faith promoting, when looked at in the proper light. Squint, man. Squint!

I am always surprised when LDS aare dismayed at other faith's proselyting efforts. They are just preaching what they believe. Our missionaries teach that there was an apostasy and the true Church was restored....I just don't get up tight about it and never really did.

Is this thread about the cop or just about Pahoran?

Perhaps we need another lecture from the general conference pulpit about

1) treating others with kindness
2) finding missionary opportunities in daily life
3) respecting others' basic rights
4) sauce: goose/ sauce: gander
5) the fine line between harassment and protection (for our LDS police officers)

Both. It is about a hypocritical attitude which apparently runs rampant amongst TBMs.

Well, at least they had that pickle parable. You'll have to tell us what you thought about it. ;)

Wasn't this in Payson? If it was, it does not surprise me at all. Cops in these parts are schizophrenic. They won't go after the abundant meth hotels in Sprinville/Spanish Fork, but they will ticket you for going 27 in a 25 mph speed zone.

Idiots.

Showing two examples hardly tells me that it's rampant. For every story you track down of something stupid done by a member I could show you a dozen about incredibly honorable and selfless actions. I challenge your statement. Show me that it's "rampant" or just admit that you're just trying to paint church members as hypocrites.

By definition, every member of the LDS church is a hypocrit. We claim to have the truth, the whole truth, yet every single one of us sin every day. Thus we know what we should do, and we do not do it... we are hypocrites. When much is given, much is expected, and we do not live up to expectations.
