In the Oct. 2006 General Conference, some will recall that GBH put his foot in his mouth during the Priesthood Session when he asked the men gathered if they "wanted to marry a women whose education is superior to your own"? It turns out that such a thing shouldn't matter, since, as the Prophet, Seer, and Revelator informs us, women are little more than material objects:
Now, we will return to our homes. We urge you who will be driving to do so carefully. Let no accident destroy the spirit of this wonderful occasion.
We hope that you will use the May edition of the Church magazines as a text for your family home evenings, to review that which has been spoken in this conference. What has been said by each of the speakers represents his or her prayerful attempt to impart knowledge that will inspire and cause all who have heard it to stand a little taller and be a little better.
May there be peace and harmony in your homes. Husbands, love and treasure your wives. They are your most precious possessions. Wives, encourage and pray for your husbands. They need all the help they can get.
Yeeouch! Possessions?!? I know that GBH is getting up there in years, but this is rather ridiculous, in my opinion.

If you think this is bad....check out GBH's first draft of this speech...

You must be bored and really looking for something to pick at. I am sure he meant nothing demeaning by it. Do you refer to your wife as YOUR wife and she HER husband? It is the nature of the language. A wife and a husband do possess each other to a certian extent. If not why are there so many wealthy divorce attorneys.
You often make good and valid points but this one is reaching for something as was your silly standard on the charity issue.

Although I object to the "possession" comment on principle, the one that really bugs me is this: "They need all the help they can get." Somehow, that comment just bugs me. It's not just the men in this church that need help. Women need all the help we can get, too.
And when the confederates saw Jackson standing fearless as a stone wall the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Nevertheless, GBH is the Lord's Mouthpiece. Why didn't he pick better words?
Do you refer to your wife as YOUR wife and she HER husband?
There is a difference between saying, "My wife if my partner," vs. "My wife is my possession."
It is the nature of the language.
The English language is fully capable of expressing the sentiment I'm sure GBH was looking for in a much more tactful way.

I see nothing wrong with asking that the One True Church on the Earth be held to high standards.

I agree, Harmony.
It's another example of unintentionally placing women on pedestals.
In addressing Scratch's point....I do think this is nit picking a little. President Hinckley is over 90 years old. He's speaking from a different culture. I don't take offense to a 90 year old man making this kind of comment...a 40 year old man, yes...but not a 90 year old. ;)
