BYU Alternative Commencement

BYU Students for Alternative Commencement is a grassroots effort comprised of BYU students, faculty, alumni, and friends from the community who are protesting Vice President Dick Cheney’s commencement speech at BYU. Directly after the official university commencement on April 26th, students and community members will march from Provo’s Memorial Park to the Castle Amphitheater. Once there, the audience will hear speeches from third party advocate Ralph Nader, former U.S. Senate candidate Pete Ashdown, and human rights activist Jack Healey. This will not be a convocation exercise, but a speaking event for the entire Utah community.

In order to host this event, we must raise $18,250. The breakdown is as follows:

$15,000: Ralph Nader fee (includes flight for two people)

$450: round trip plane flight from DC for Jack Healey

$600: 3 single hotel rooms, two nights

$200: food and spending money for Nader, Healey, and Ashdown

$1000: permits, printing expenses, etc.

$1000: sound system

Because our organization is composed primarily of students, outside financial backing is essential.

We have ten days to raise this money and need everyone to donate:

-Make credit card donations through our online Paypal account at www.byualternativecommencement.com

-Make checks payable to the “Gene and Charlotte England Education Fund”

-Send check or cash donations to:

Where: We will meet at Memorial Park, (on Provo Center Street between 700 and 900 East) and march to the Castle Amphitheater on1300 East Center Street (directly behind the Utah State Hospital).

When: The march begins at 6:30pm on April 26th. The Alternative Commencement begins at 7:00pm.
