Dr. Peterson Weighs in on Self-Abuse

There's a thread about masturbation over on FAIR/MAD (any bets on how long before it's closed?), and normally I don't single out Dr. Peterson, but his remarks here seem just a tad over the top to me:

In certain progressive circles, the whole concept of "self-control" (particularly in sexual matters) is seen as inherently ridiculous.

Some forms of pop-Freudianism regard "repression" as perhaps the ultimate sin.

And, of course, it is an article of faith among the very most progressive that (a) previous moral attitudes were laughable (when they were not contemptible) but that (b) subsequent generations will regard current progressive moral attitudes with justly solemn reverence. The entire evolutionary history of humankind was a prelude to . . . us.

"O Lord, what fools these mortals be!"

I was going to say that it's not just "progressive circles" who find the Mormon obsession with masturbation ridiculous, but then Jaybear beat me to it.

Talk about an overstatement. Lumping the subject at hand with the whole concept of self control.

Frankly, I don't think its just the "most progressive" who find moral condemnation of this particular indulgence to laughable. I suspect it would be more accurate to say that most people under 50, living outside of Utah County share that view.

I'm sure I'm going to get a verbose tongue-lashing from Coggins (hope he's got his thesaurus at the ready).

Well, couple things here:

- First off, DCP is a dumbass (sorry for this bit of self-indulgence, but since that's the topic of the thread... I just wanted to let everyone know that I still feel this way)
- This last episode of DCP silliness is likely the result of jealousy on the part of DCP for having grown up in a time when he had to feel guilty every time he [MODERATOR NOTE: Forgive me, but the imagery here was a little too distasteful to leave intact. I hope you don't mind that I deleted it.]

Ahhh... the joys of guilt-free masturbation. What a great era we live in, eh?

Umm..
Judging from the last picture I have seen of DCP.. he hardly seems to be the poster boy for self control..

What's the big deal?

I notice someone there thinks masturbation may not be a sin, but the same person starts threads about how wrong it is for Marriott hotels to sell adult films in their rooms. Where do you draw the line?

I'd amend Jaybear's comment with something like:

" . . . outside of Utah county and Tehran share that view."

Really? You thought that was distasteful? Wow.

And to think I toned it down.

Well, just so the point isn't lost, I'm just saying that DCP is probably responding to his own self-gratification guilt.

But seriously... distasteful? Really?

Hmph.

...Oh wait, if you're referring to the image of DCP pleasuring himself, I guess I can see where you're coming from. Alright, good move.

If you had kept it to generalities, then it would've been perfectly acceptable, of course. :-)

Another perfectly acceptable point to make.

Hmph.

Read on. . .

Yep, that was exactly what I found distasteful. Don't you? :-)

Absolutely. Once it occurred to me, I was in full support of the edit.

I really don't care what DCP has to say on the topic.

Does anyone see anything strange in the first para of this post by "Kadahow"?

Having treated sex offenders I would like to put a thought or two here.

All the sex offenders I treated had to break away from a rich fantasy life. Fantasy about having sex with children, non-consentual sex, and other forms of sexual outlets. What went along with the fantasies was the masterbation. Some clients didn't have too much of a problem, where other clients had a great deal of a problem, like masterbating 10-12 times a day. To change behaviors they had to change life styles. They had to drop the fantasies. In fact there is a treatment mode that was used using masterbation and adult pornography (soft or hard). I chose not to use that method because it still taught the men that its okay to have objects (fantasy removed the humanity of his fantasy victim) of sexual contact, I wanted them to see people (man or woman) as real, children as real and that all could hurt because of his desires and acting out.
