Did you see the video? He was a friggin nerd as a missionary. The image that they used while he talked about his old man crying as his parents sent him off, poor guy was going bald back then!

I wonder if Dan puts a donut in a hat and draws it up to his face... Snarf!

PP, be nice. I'm just glad no one has access to a picture of me. I can imagine the comments... everything from wondering what I saw that made my hair go so white, to trying to count my chins. Our physical appearance shouldn't be something we have to worry about here. Maybe you have a comment on what he said, instead of what he looks like?

I have to admit to being fascinated by this interview. I kept thinking, "Well, I understand the words coming out of your mouth, but it's really difficult to believe you actually think this is true."

I mean, we're talking *massive* self-delusion. Seriously. It was like listening to someone giving a serious and historical accounting of the life and times of the Easter Bunny, as though they'd been there to witness it.

I'm no fan of making fun of someone's appearance, either. It's not only cruel, it's also irrelevant. Our issues are with people's ideas, not their waistlines.

Since Daniel C. Peterson recently decided to start Posting here, I decided to bump this discussion thread up front. by the way, Daniel Peterson is very wrong about the 'missing papyrus text theory' about the Book of Abraham in that interview he gave.

No he's not. Endless hypothetical hairsplitting by the likes of Graham are not going to solve the mystery. This has been going on since the Sixties and its going to go on for a long time to come. We know with certainly, from clear historical accounts, that there was a large quantity of textual material in the possession of the Church that has disappeared This material was fairly copious. Graham has added nothing to the debate but more mud. This isn't to say that,from a purely naturalistic standpoint, his claims are necessarily implausible. Counter claims, however, are plausible too. The presuppositions one brings to the argument here are of prime importance when so much crucial data is not extent.

Given the dearth of evidence, both critics and supporters can make plausible claims. But the problem for critics isn't the origin of the text itself, but the ideas and concepts contained in the Book of Abraham, concepts unknown to Joseph Smith or any Biblical scholar at the time but which have become well attested in a substantial religious texts that have come to light only long after Joseph's death.

That's wear the rubber begins to hit the road.

Cog - you're like a fundamentalist arguing for creationism. I'm sure it sounds good to you, but you've got to face the music: The missing scroll theory is dead.

But don't worry, when that fails, you can shift to the catalyst theory, like most others have done. No one can completely kill that theory.

Just like the rest of us, Dr. Peterson's appearance is neither here nor there. It simply has no bearing on his apologetic arguments or his comments during the PBS interview.

For what it's worth, I thought Dr. Peterson was quite likable in his interview and I think he has a good sense of humor, though I tend to disagree with him about Mormonism. ;)
