A classic conversation with TBM friends about the PBS show

Last Wednesday I was at the home of some TBM friends of mine. I asked the husband how he liked the PBS show, and he said it was okay except for one part which was really offensive: The obvious lie by an anti-Mormon woman who claimed that there were death oaths in the temple. He continued by saying something like, "I'm surprised she didn't continue with allegations like dancing naked and sacrificing chickens!"

I sort of sat back and said, "So, when did you go through the temple?"

He responded by saying, "Well, we were married in 1991, but didn't go through the temple until 1992." At that point I explained that I went through in 1989, and back then (and up 'till April 1990) such oaths were indeed part of the temple ceremony. I said, "Oh, she used the wrong finger and didn't get the intent quite right, but back then each token had its corresponding name, sign, and penalty. So what she was saying was actually the truth."

His eyes got quite wide. Just then his wife walked back into the room, and he said, "Hey honey, that part about the death oaths was actually true!" She was just as surprised as he was.

I thought it was quite a memorable conversation.

Sounds like he is a critical thinker.

Expound on the ceremony more about how it changed, about how up until 1927 or so, that members swore an oath to "avenge the blood of the prophet Joseph", that was removed because the press started talkin about it.

Then once the crack stays open on its own, cook up some delicious warm papyrus truths and pour it in!

Man I am jealous! It has been a while since I got to help a TBM with their first WTF? moment..

Remember, the key to unwitting nevermos becoming a Mormon is getting them to believe that smith was a divine prophet. Well the opposite is simply getting them to question the divinity of old Joe.

You my friend, have a wonderful opportunity to strip away the delusion away, and get them to see Joe for what he really is. A plain old dishonest man.

Remember what it took for you to see the truth, remember what was the final snowflake that caused the avalanche of truth which destroyed your testiphony. Remember the things that help you and seek ways to present them to your friends.

Does no one talk to their elders anymore or read? Within 6 months of getting my endowments people had told me all of this stuff.

How can you discern that he is a critical thinker from the evidence that he was ignorant about something and was surprised to learn the truth?

How can you discern that he is a critical thinker from the evidence that he was ignorant about something and was surprised to learn the truth?

His reaction was similar to mine upon discovering the marriage infidelity that Joe cloaked as celestial polygamous marriage. It was equal for my wife, she FREAKED when she realized that old Joe CHEATED on his dear Emma.

It took her a while longer to bolt from the cult, but she is now out along with all of our kids, and yes we have a large family. Not only our family but both of my RM brothers and their wife and kids, AND all of my brother's seven inlaw siblings!

If I count up all of the people that left from my planting seeds of doubt it is close to 30!

I bear witness that the good doctor will succeed in helping his friends exit the f'ckin cult.

This whole theory hangs on whether you are a critical thinker then. I suppose it was critical thinking that came up with the Nehsnore name. Based on that evidence my 5 year old nephew is your equal in critical thinking.

Maybe I'm crazy but I like living in houses where things like that are said routinely. Keeps down boredom.

I went through the temple around Nov.-Dec. of 90. My Dad was talking about the change as we walked out the front door of the Temple.

What doctrine was changed? What lesson was unlearned due to the removal of this element? None.

The windsock that is porter is twisting again, but all it shows is the direction the hot air is blowing.
