Quote of Joseph Smith?

Post by _barrelomonkeys »

"...A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet," (Joseph Smith, HC, vol. 6:408-409).

What is the HC? What is the context of this? What do apologetics say about this? TBM?

Just from an outsider investigating I feel unnerved when I read this.

Joseph himself did not stand with kirtland when it fell apart. He ran away. It was his MO.

HC means History of the Church, I believe. There is also a Documentary History of the Church, but I believe that is different. Same short-term memory problems, or I would be able to help you more.

Can't help you with the rest. You ought to throw it out to the MADness crew. They will be all over this and give you lots of information.

Of course, be careful, if you do so. Be prepared for many challenges to your motives for posting it. But you know the routine over there.

I'm neither an apologist nor a TBM. I do love to watch their responses to this quote, however, so I will listen along with you (for the umpteenth time.)

One excuse is that the speech was recorded incorrectly. Of course, there is no evidence it was recorded incorrectly, but if something makes Joseph Smith or Mormonism look bad, then it was automatically recorded incorrectly according to the apologists.

Another excuse, seen less often, is that Joseph was speaking as a man, not as a prophet, and therefore gets a free pass.

Did you know that Joseph was actively campaigning to become President of the United States just before he was murdered?
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Sunday, May 26, 1844. Joseph was killed about a month later.

What is the context of the quote? When the snake was talking the subtext was always what joe wanted you to do. In this case, stand with him always.

Being that the good point of the upcoming presidential shot in the dark has been brought up, political power brokering would have been starting at the point in time of the quote. It seems that he was girding up his loins, starting the process of building his capital, both politically and monetarily.

Shades, any clue how much $$$ joe had dedicated to his campaign?
