I certainly don't have anything to back this up, other than my own experiences in Utah County, but from what I've observed, very few chapel Mormons even know there are troubling aspects of Mormonisms past. Other than BY had multiple wives, and probably the priesthood ban.

I wonder if September Dawn will awaken a sense of wonder in the chapel Mormon? Will they wonder what other parts of their history they have never heard about?

If I were still a chapel Mormon, I think I would. The MMM would fascinate me and I would want to learn what other fascinating parts of Mormon history I was missing out on.

Mormonism really does have a fascinating history. It's a shame more people don't learn about it.

Actually, what it will probably do is encourage me to watch even less Hollywood product than I do now, which is precious little.

Yeah, there is precious little good coming out of Hollywood these days.

I believe the vast majority of TBMs are like Coggins. So whatever he posts here is pretty much what you can expect from TBMs.

As a never mo I'll tell you what learning about MMM did for me. I was completely stunned and surprised that there was this bit of history I had NEVER heard of. I then searched for "LDS Massacre" and "Mormon Massacre" and found a lot! Of course I found some right in my own backyard in Tennessee where there were a number of LDS murdered.

I have gone to my local archives, and neighboring counties, a number of times and tried to find out more information. I've shared what information I did find with some ancestors and others that were interested.

I don't know if that's the norm but it certainly helped me to think about how good people can do horrific things no matter what their religious stripe. I would hope that those outside of the Church would do the same when they learn of this history.. and I'm rather optimistic that they will. :)

I doubt it. I live in Utah County as well, and agree with you that most people don't know about these issues.

However, what I've noticed, is that most people don't care. That's what's mind-boggling to me.

As a so-called "Chapel Mormon", I doubt "September Dawn" will cause me to do any more research than I already have--in large part because the pre-publicity for the film hasn't piqued my interest enough to motivate me to watch it. To me, there are far more productive uses of my time, and far more worthy things to research--like finding ways to better oneself and mankind.

By "don't care," do you mean they don't care that the items are there, or they "don't care" to learn about them?

Me: "Hey, did you know Joseph Smith married other mens wives"
TBM: "Oh, wow, I never knew that. Oh well. Hey, are you going to the BYU game?"

Please see my other thread. It seems to me that none of them will bother to see the film, since TBM fervor against it will have successfully persuaded most of the rank-and-file that it is "anti-Mormon." "The thinking has been done," in other words.
