I think Mormonism and Scientology should merge

Like any two corporations competing for customers, I think Mormonism and Scientology would be best served by merging. This proposed merger makes all the more sense when one considers Mormonism was the Scientology of the 19th century, and it already has some built in science fiction elements that would dovetail nicely with Xenu and the Galatic Confederacy. (Kolob could be the Galatic Confederacy's Coruscant.)

Last I checked, Scientology doesn't line up with the core of Mormonism: the atonement of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, last I checked, Scientology says nothing about God.

Sure, you can argue that Mormonism has God wrong, but you still have to deal with the fact that Mormonism is inherently theistic--even if you insist on characterizing it as polytheistic--whereas Scientology, to my knowledge, is atheistic. That's a pretty big an insurmountable difference.

Thanks for the suggestion. The next time I see a general authority I will mention your idea with him. However, I do realize that you were being just a little negative about the church in your post. Trying to link the LDS church with scientology is just a little far fetched. They have nothing in common at all. But I understood that you were trying to create a negative cult connection between the two groups. But you failed.

They certainly have something in common: their founders made up wild claims, and now have millions who believe them.

Nothing a little FARMS apologetics couldn't clear up. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. The next time I see a Tom Cruise I will mention your idea with him. However, I do realize that you were being just a little negative about scientology in your post. As if the Mormons are smart enough to believe in aliens... HA!

I take exception to the dismissive attitude in this thread toward His Admiralty, the most excellent Elrond Hubbard, who said his name would be known for theta and entheta. The parallels between two of the world's great religions should be cause for excitement. Indeed, these sort of parallels are exactly the sort of evidence FARMS cites for the veracity of Mormon scripture!

L Ron Hubbard is the archetypal confidence man Joseph Smith was. To say anything different is ignoring the facts at history's disposal.

What are the Mormons to learn from Raelianism?
