Egyptus, the founder of Egypt
In the Book of Abraham 1 we read:
21 Now this king of Egypt was a descendant from the loins of Ham, and was a partaker of the blood of the Canaanites by birth.
22 From this descent sprang all the Egyptians, and thus the blood of the Canaanites was preserved in the land.
23 The land of Egypt being first discovered by a woman, who was the daughter of Ham, and the daughter of Egyptus, which in the Chaldean signifies Egypt, which signifies that which is forbidden;
24 When this woman discovered the land it was under water, who afterward settled her sons in it; and thus, from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.
25 Now the first government of Egypt was established by Pharaoh, the eldest son of Egyptus, the daughter of Ham, and it was after the manner of the government of Ham, which was patriarchal (Abraham 1.21-25).
Now, "Egypt" is a Greek word; the Egyptian word for Egypt is Kemet. Why would the eponymous founder of Egypt (according to Joe) have a Greek given name?

This looks like fertile ground for a spinoff book, The Book of Egyptus.
When it says she first discovered Egypt and it was underwater, did she discover it while on the Ark looking over the side into the clear deep ocean seeing the land below and saying "This is the place"? Was she even on the Ark? How did she and Ham meet? Where did he take her on their first date? These are all questions I want to know.

Because the account was not translated from nor to Egyptian/Kemetian.
Same reason we speak about Jesus Christ (Greek/English) instead of Yeshua (the Messiach).

Or maybe it was during the cyclical flooding of the Nile which made Egypt fertile.

Egyptian priests told Herodotus that in the reign of Min, the first ruler of Egypt, a large area of Egypt was under water. In addition, Arrian says that the Nile river was originally called Aegyptus: "the river gave its name to the country, for that Aegyptus was originally the name of the river now known both in Egypt and elsewhere in the world as the Nile there is sufficient evidence in Homer, where we find the statement that Menelaus brought up 'at the mouth of the Aegyptus'" (Arrian 1971, 264). Josephus, citing Manetho, says that Sethosis was called Egyptus: "The country also was called from his name Egypt; for Manetho says that Sethosis himself was called Egyptus, as was his brother Armais, called Danaus" (Josephus 1974, 4:166). The Book of Abraham has simply rewritten Egyptian history, naming the country after Egyptus, the daughter of Ham, who discovered it lying under water.

Can you imagine having the name Ham? Talk about an invitation to being treated like a piece of meat. Of course, he'd still be expected to bring home the bacon, and to pork his wife (I wonder if he tasted salty). I suppose he was never sick; he was always cured. I also wonder if his wife called him Honey. And was he the reason women started saying all men are pigs?
These are all questions I want to know.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

So, was Egyptus' name really Kemetus, and it was just translated to Egyptus in the PoGP?
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Bah, I dunno. After reading the stuff from CaliforniaKid I realize I don't know how things really went down. I was just trying to counter CC's remarks about language. For all I know they didn't even speak Egyptian. For all I know those verses don't have any connection to how Egypt is named today, but refer to something before the years of Egyptian dynasties (but my knowledge of history is terrible, so that may not be plausible).

Part of the key here is to understand that when the PoGP mentions peoples as populating areas after the Flood of Noah, it's important to realize that the Flood of Noah is pure mythology, and it never actually happened. Thus, the "curse" of the Canaanites wasn't preserved in the land through one of Noah's family members; in fact, the Israelites themselves are considered by modern archeology to probably have just been Canaanites themselves. If a given LDS scripture has storyline which includes the global, catastrophic Flood, however, you can know it's just fiction. As if you didn't know that already.
