Wendover Wedding weekends, do they still happen?

When I was at BYU years ago. (mid to late 60's and to 71) a popular thing among some of the students was 'the Wendover Wedding Weekend'. They took off as a couple and drove to Wendover, Nevada and got married. Told no one and then went to a lawyer before coming back and started divorce proceedings... all on a friendly note. This gave them at least 8-12 weeks of 'married sex' time and then they were free to go and do it again with another partner. Or, they could lengthen the time by holding off on the divorce paperwork and enjoy connubial bliss for a longer time secure in the knowledge that if their bedroom antics were found out and/or reported that they were in the clear, married legally and OK to be together.

I knew a number of students then who took this route. One had been 'married' legally this way eight times and a number more than three times.

Does this still go on at BYU? Is it still somewhat common among LDS kids who want the experience but not the responsibility and an instant 'it's OK, we're married' excuse if/when they get found together?

An Apostle showed up and told them it was WRONG. It has mostly stopped last I heard.

My one regret: a non-Nevada wedding. Maybe, though, I can still divorce and retie the marriage bonds in NV someday...or possibly Mexico...

I'd always thought this was a Mormon myth.
...so they really went on then? Wow...

Once Dry Humping was introduced it was enough to satisfy their horniness.

A shorter drive and the only thing to clean up is a pair of mens jeans.

I've never heard of this before.....I mean people elope around here but they usually want to stay married, not just as some sort of legal condom so they can use a condom.

Crikey......driving all the way to Nevada just so they can go at it? Talk about screwed up in the mind.....all you need around here is for a girl's roommate to leave the room (nearly) empty for a few hours.

Edited to update for college life.....lol

I've heard of this happening before too ... and it was from my missionary comps who supposedly had friends who had done it - so it may have still been going on fairly recently (like, in the 90s). Of course, most of my comps believed tonnes of ridiculous Mormon urban legends (like the laundromat being struck by lightning after the owners made fun of garments), so I have to take their testimony with a grain of salt.

However, I have to say that if people really truly DID do this, then they were pretty stupid. If the Mormon god truly exists and has been issuing commandments, then he's not going to be fooled by a couple of horny BYU undergrads finding loopholes in his laws.

If these students really believed in the church, did they really think that they were being clever enough to fool god??? Why not just follow the principles you supposedly believe?

If, on the other hand, they thought that the church is a load of crap, why go through all that trouble to keep up the charade? Why not just do what you want in private and keep your mouth shut?

Sometimes I don't get people.
