I got an email from my dad who wrote asking about the similarities of Osama and Giddianhi.
So in recent video, bin Laden invited the US to join him in order to stop his attacks. Isn't this similar to Giddianhi, leader of the Gadianton robbers, in 3 Nephi 3
6 Therefore I write unto you, desiring that ye would yield up unto this my people, your cities, your lands, and your possessions, rather than that they should visit you with the sword and that destruction should come upon you. 7 Or in other words, yield yourselves up unto us, and unite with us and become acquainted with our secret works, and become our brethren that ye may be like unto us—not our slaves, but our brethren and partners of all our substance. 8 And behold, I swear unto you, if ye will do this, with an oath, ye shall not be destroyed; but if ye will not do this, I swear unto you with an oath, that on the morrow month I will command that my armies shall come down against you, and they shall not stay their hand and shall spare not, but shall slay you, and shall let fall the sword upon you even until ye shall become extinct. 9 And behold, I am Giddianhi; and I am the governor of this the secret society of Gadianton; which society and the works thereof I know to be good; and they are of ancient date and they have been handed down unto us. 10 And I write this epistle unto you, Lachoneus, and I hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your possessions, without the shedding of blood, that this my people may recover their rights and government, who have dissented away from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them their rights of government, and except ye do this, I will avenge their wrongs. I am Giddianhi.

Giddianhi is a fictional character, a product of a megalomaniacs imagination. Osama is real. The comparison ends there as you cannot apply osamas behavior effectively against a fictional character.

Oh, I think comparisons between Iraq and Vietnam are more helpful, at this point.
What does one do with a comparison between Giddianhi (who may well have been a fictional actor anyway) and Osama Bin Laden? Should we follow the example of the Nephites and resist Osama's invitation to convert to Islam? I think it's pretty obvious we aren't going to accept any invitations from the secret society of Al-Qaida.
What was the point of your father's comparison? I don't see it going anywhere even if I assume Giddianhi was real.

I think his point was that Osama is like the leader of the Gadianton robbers and this invitation is evidence of that. It may have also been the other way around--namely that the Book of Mormon seems to have predicted the behavior of wicked men and therefore this latest video from bin Laden is evidence that the Book of Mormon is true, or something like that.
In a later email, he mentioned how even though the Nephites didn't go up to fight the robbers, Captain Moroni did make the threat to go up to battle against the Lamanites unless they did X. So maybe in that sense he wonders about how one should fight wars too and wants to use the Book of Mormon as a guide. He is, after all, a bishop.

It predicted Osama? This is evidence that the Book of Mormon is true? You and I both know the logic here is half-baked at best. My Dad does the same sort of thing, though. Same topic, even.

So maybe we shouldn't go and fight the terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe we should be like the Nephites and close ourselves off in our lands, letting the robbers lay siege at our borders. It would be best to burn all the farms and tear up all the roads in Mexico and Canada, so the pillaging Islamo-fascists cannot live off the land as they wait for our surrender. Then, once we have enough solar-powered Bradley fighting vehicles, we can kick their starving asses back to Asia.
Go neo-neo-conservatives!

I wonder what he'd say if I mentioned that we all need to join a particular organization and become acquanted with the secr -- er -- sacred works in a special building. Otherwise we'll suffer death -- spiritual death.
He'd probably just say that Satan once again perverts God's method. At least that's what I'd say. That being the case, I think it kinda undermines the significance about inviting people to join your side in they value their lives and happiness.

Yah, but people don't base their whole lives around the examples of Shakespeare. Furthermore, its viewed as F I C T I O N.
