That's right. There's an essay on the rounds right now that claims that voting against Referendum 1 would be a vote for the destruction of Mormon culture.

Utah's State Senate Republicans have been touting this on their blog www.senatesite.com.

Political hype and nothing more. I'm voting against the vouchers along with the majority of Utahns, according to what I've seen on the news.

I have a new laptop and I am a complete imbecile when it comes to tech stuff so I can't figure out how to open the PDF file. I tried to open it with some program and it looks like hieroglyphics!

Can someone make a synopsis?

I'll assume that with the voucher program they hope to move all the students that are LDS to heavily populated LDS schools? Is that about right? Or do I have it wrong?

As if the destruction of Mormon culture would be a bad thing?

Book of Mormon, install adobe acrobat and you'll be able to view it.

Basically, the essay states that the public school system in Utah was instituted by the Feds in order to stifle Mormon culture way-back when and to vote against the school voucher this time around would be to vote against current Mormon culture by furthering the institutions that the Feds implimented.

It's a lot of nonsense fear-mongering.

Which leads to the questions "What was Mormon culture and why would people want to stifle it (way back when)?"

Just because the Utah Republicans have sold out the public interest for a handful of dollars, does not mean they have to add further injury by dragging their religion into it. Hopefully after the voters have turned down this referendum they will take a hard look at the evils of a one party system - before they go back to sleep.

Who pays? The parents or the tax payer?

Who benefits? The schools in elite neighborhoods or the schools in poor neighborhoods?

When in doubt, follow the money.

It shows a remarkable misunderstanding about the history of education in Utah.
