Positives of the Church

I said some really ugly things about Mormons about a week ago on this board. :)

I was a bit of a hot head and regret I said it. I won't delete it (which is a wonder since I usually spasticly delete crap), because I think there was some (or a lot) of truth to what I observe from the Church.

Yet, I think it's easy to see the negatives and it's often times hard to look at the brighter side and recognize that there are positives as well.

Anyway, I do see some good from the Church and appreciate many of the things the Church emphasizes. One of them that I really appreciate is the emphasis I've noticed for music instruction. I think that's emphasized, at least it appears that way to me. I also really think the emphasis on education is fantabulous!

So, is there anything that you can think of that is positive of the LDS Church? If you have nothing nice to say or you're going to be a smart ass I'll ask you to please refrain from commenting.

Overall, church members are well organized and can respond quickly to an emergency situation, or to help someone in severe need. My nephew is presently in Iraq, and his ward (and workplace, they live in utah and most of his coworkers are LDS) organized together to help take care of his wife and their four kids. So many people offered to help that her bishop has to cordinate it all.

There are times when this mechanism fails and doesn't respond to someone in genuine need, and it certainly didn't replace welfare during the depression like some church spokesmen would have one believe, but it certainly is an aspect of Mormonism that I would call good.

The whole getting to live in perpetual bliss in the end is my favorite plus.

So, the dogma gives people peace and comfort with the thought that they'll be with their families for eternity. I think that's rather nice too. :)

Although, of course, you know I don't believe it for a second. Yet, I appreciate that many find serenity from this thought.

My (partial) list of positives about the church:

1. everyone is given the opportunity to learn public speaking skills, from smallest child to oldest adult.
2. everyone has an assigned task.
3. when there's a ward party, everyone is invited.
4. anywhere you move or visit, there's a ward or branch you can attend.
5. generally speaking, we take care of our own.
6. a host of social ills are forbidden: gambling, drinking, smoking, sleeping around.
7. thrift is encouraged.
8. the least may lead (although they rarely do)
9. we can be angels.
10. a place to showcase talent.

Not to mention the 72 virgins.
