The white = purity image is entirely a cultural interpretation based on ancient Semitic thinking (perhaps). If one goes further back, the meaning of white = death. It is the white of dead bones, decay, the end. It is not something seen as holy and sacred to be reverent about.

I suppose it's like the Telestial symbol of stars. The use of such symbol invokes an opposite meaning to most people, but it is just a subjective symbol nonetheless.

Of course, that chart is only a beginning; the fact that different languages divide the colour spectrum in such distinctly different ways makes the question of the simplistic alignment of white with "purity" and darker colours with....whatever whine me is trying to say...seem even more limited.

This article, "Hues and Views," discusses recent work on colour and culture among the Himba tribe of Namibia. Researchers compared the acquisition of terms for colour among Himba and British children. Himba could not readily "see" the difference between a green and a blue:

White reflects the visible spectrum and black absorbs it. White shows up stains better, but becomes out of fashion after Labor Day. Sammy Davis liked white shoes and Colonel Harland Sanders liked white suits.
