Church welfare/assisted members required to work at D.I. ?

Post by _Polygamy-Porter »

When a member receives "assistance" from LDS Inc in the forms of financial assistance and free food from the bishop's storehouse, are they required to work at Deseret Industries?

No. But insofar as they are able, they are required to work; if not "for real" then in the form of assigned service projects. Could be as simple as mowing a widow's lawn, etc.

The church expects an "able" person to do something..... volunteering or working at D.I. to serve or to get ones life in order is one of many things a person could do to "do their part", rather than getting something for nothing.

The church is about lifting people, helping them learn self sufficiency, responsibility, pride, and duty, not about creating dependent people, unlike liberals.

After reading these scriptures together, Bishop Orellana looked at the new convert and said, “If paying tithing means that you can’t pay for water or electricity, pay tithing. If paying tithing means that you can’t pay your rent, pay tithing. Even if paying tithing means that you don’t have enough money to feed your family, pay tithing. The Lord will not abandon you.”

The next Sunday, Amado approached Bishop Orellana again. This time he didn’t ask any questions. He simply handed his bishop an envelope and said, “Bishop, here is our tithing.”

Reflecting on this experience, Bishop Orellana says, “Ever since then, they have been faithful tithe payers.” The family received some commodities from the bishops’ storehouse during their financial difficulties. Beyond that, the Lord blessed them to be able to care for themselves. Evelyn received a promotion, and Amado found a good job. Evelyn later lost her job, but they continued to pay tithing and to receive spiritual and temporal blessings for their faithfulness. Once Bishop Orellana asked Amado how the family was doing financially. Amado responded, “We’re doing all right. Sometimes we don’t have much to eat, but we have enough. And more than anything, we trust in the Lord.”

If the Church is about self-sufficiency, why didn't the bishop tell this man to take care of his family first and the Church second?

pride,

Pride is a very misunderstood sin, and many are sinning in ignorance. (See Mosiah 3:11; 3 Ne. 6:18.) In the scriptures there is no such thing as righteous pride—it is always considered a sin. Therefore, no matter how the world uses the term, we must understand how God uses the term so we can understand the language of holy writ and profit thereby. (See 2 Ne. 4:15; Mosiah 1:3–7; Alma 5:61.)

It's unfortunate that you don't appear to know anything in particular about what your church teaches.

and duty, not about creating dependent people, unlike liberals.

Liberals generally believe that the government has certain duties toward its people. Tell me some duties that the Church recognizes itself as having toward its members.

Yeah, self-sufficiency, about that...

On the morning of its grand opening, thousands of shoppers thronged downtown Salt Lake, eager to elbow their way into the stores. The national anthem played, and Henry B. Eyring, one of Monson’s top counselors, told the crowds, “Everything that we see around us is evidence of the long-standing commitment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Salt Lake City.” When it came time to cut the mall’s flouncy pink ribbon, Monson, flanked by Utah dignitaries, cheered, “One, two, three—let’s go shopping!”

Watching a religious leader celebrate a mall may seem surreal, but City Creek reflects the spirit of enterprise that animates modern-day Mormonism. The mall is part of a sprawling church-owned corporate empire that the Mormon leadership says is helping spread its message, increasing economic self-reliance, and building the Kingdom of God on earth. “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints attends to the total needs of its members,” says Keith B. McMullin, who for 37 years served within the Mormon leadership and now heads a church-owned holding company, Deseret Management Corp. (DMC), an umbrella organization for many of the church’s for-profit businesses. “We look to not only the spiritual but also the temporal, and we believe that a person who is impoverished temporally cannot blossom spiritually.

Unlike Jesus, the Church don't want no scroungers, right faqs?
“When we are confronted with evidence that challenges our deeply held beliefs we are more likely to reframe the evidence than we are to alter our beliefs. We simply invent new reasons, new justifications, new explanations. Sometimes we ignore the evidence altogether.” (Mathew Syed 'Black Box Thinking')

The LDS Church has the same charge as all other Christian churches to care for the poor and needy. The only difference being the extra added layer of conservatism that sometimes attaches itself to the LDS way of being. We are not heartless task masters, it is simply that conservatism that demands its pound of flesh.

The members are required to build up the kingdom of God. The church has no responsibilities toward its members other than teaching them the gospel. What BC Space and his friend ldsfaqs get confused by is it makes no sense to try to put an American political label on the Mormon church. America is a Democratic-Republic run by elected representatives of the people. The ultimate authority in the US is the constitution. Liberals and conservatives have different philosophies within this framework. The church is a theocracy ruled by a small group of men who are appointed by each other and claim to speak for God. The ultimate authority in the church are these men. You can't fit the American political definition of liberal or conservative on the Mormon church. It's like looking at a cat and trying to decide if it's a golden retriever of a black lab.

Did Jesus ask if the poor he fed deserved the food? Just curious.

The Bible is only correct as far as it was translated correctly. I seriously doubt Jesus did any liberal acts. And I doubt he had long hair and didn't wear a white shirt and tie. More likely he was a businessman who was persecuted by Roman liberals and he looked like this:

I wondered for a minute if this message board might be your "volunteer" work but then I realized, they would probably pay you to NOT post here.
