Circular windows, how could Joseph Smith have known...

Post by _I have a question »

Sister Wendy W. Nelson, shared a message about how the latter days are marvelous days, “days filled to over flowing with the fulfillment of prophecies.”

Sister Nelson shared three situations where a person relied on knowledge of the Lord, rather than the "manner of man.”

First, Sister Nelson spoke of Nephi.

“His impeccable obedience is always inspiring to me,” she said. “Nephi was asked by the Lord to do really impossible things. ... Over and over again the Lord asked Nephi to do things Nephi did not know how to do. And yet, Nephi’s response was always the same.”

Sister Nelson spoke of Nephi’s courage to “go and do” what the Lord asked him to do, not because it will be fun or easy, but because it is what the Lord wanted him to do.

The second situation Sister Nelson spoke of was the Prophet Joseph Smith.

“The Prophet Joseph Smith was asked to build a temple in Nauvoo,” Sister Nelson said. “The Lord showed him exactly what the temple would look like.”

When the architect, William Weeks, approached the prophet with a plan, Joseph noticed there weren’t any circular windows. The prophet instructed Weeks that the windows should be circular — despite the known rules of architecture at the time.

“Because the Lord had shown the prophet the Nauvoo Temple in the vision, Joseph Smith was undaunted, he was determined that the temple would have circular windows as shown him by the Lord,” she said. “Joseph knew the Lord Himself was a true architect of the temple.”

Circular windows weren’t within known architectural rules in 1800’s America?

Thank goodness for the light of Christ, or else James Renwick would never have put that massive circular window on the front of the Smithsonian Institution.

Now why would JSjr have hired architect William Weeks if the Lord Himself was a true architect of the temple and had shown JSjr every detail?

And there was absolutely no chance whatsoever that Joseph Smith could have come across drawings of European cathedrals with circular windows (some dating back to the 10th century).

This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. Even as a faith promoting story, it's missing the punchline.

There is supposed to be a final line with some kind of exterior vindication of the choice of circular windows. Sometime that in hindsight proves he was right all along. How the round windows made elevators possible or something. But no. It's completely circular (no pun intended), because all we're told is that the round windows coincide with Smith's vision. So what?

Smith asked his architect for a nice Greek Revival building, the architect delivers, and then Smith demands round windows. Architect says that's not Greek Revival, Smith says I don't care, gimme round windows. Architect acquiesces, and this is a miracle how?

This same story plays out every day as people with more money than taste design their McMansions. Most don't claim that the resulting monstrosities were shown to them in a vision from God, but they might as well. Where is the miracle?

EDIT: By the way, why no round windows on the current Nauvoo temple? Did GBH use up all his temple revelation designing Hong Kong? Or is it because they were ugly the first time around?

Yeah Circled windows were a new invention made by Joseph Smith...other buildings say Monticello built in 1770 which predated the Nauvoo Temple by half a century...only appear to ahve round windows.

This seems to be typical MO of Joseph Smith. When Joseph was dictating his book to Emma he stopped and asked Emma after having dictating that Jerusalem had walls.. if Jerusalam did in fact have walls. Its a trick of his to make it appear like he's some kind of idiot savant and has no idea what he's talking about...and make it appear like he's receiving revelation at the same time... Don't be fooled, Smith knew exactly what he was doing.
