The stone rolls forth: Church is closing 12 missions

Post by _sunstoned »

The church has announced that they are opening 4 new missions and consolidate 12 others.

The new missions are:

Democratic Republic of the Congo Kinshasa East
Guatemala Antigua
Peru Limatambo
Philippines Antipolo

The 12 existing missions to be closed are:

Argentina Posadas
California Irvine
California Long Beach
California Rancho Cucamonga
Canada Halifax
Florida Tallahassee
Georgia Macon
Idaho Nampa
Japan Sendai
Korea Daejeon
New York Utica
Virginia Chesapeake

So they are open four new missions in the third world, and closing twelve (7 in the U.S.). I am wondering how Jeffry Holland is going to spin this one.

My mission is one of those being closed. It’s quite the contrast from the time elder oaks visited and prophesied an “explosion of converts”. Guess that never happened.

At the end of 2018 the Church claimed 407 missions. The Church News article states that as of July 2019 there will be 399 missions. Is there a definition of "growth" that I'm unaware of?
These changes will take place July 1, at which time the Church will have a total of 399 missions worldwide.

Meanwhile, last year...
(KUTV) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced several changes to their missions on Thursday, including merging 19 missions into others and the creation of five new missions.

In October of 2017, the LDS Church announced that the number of its 421 missions would be adjusted "to better fit the needs of each region of the world," a news release states.

Do you remember the Church spending loads of money on building increased MTC capacity in reaction to Monson's age reduction "bubble" only for it to be wasted as the bubble receded and the additionally (and belatedly) created capacity to go unused? It's like they couldn't see the bubble or the recession coming...something, something, spirit of discernment, something.

One of my former areas is a mission being closed. Wow!

Saw this on the Church's Twitter feed:

the headline:
Four new missions will open in July. See other changes to the Church’s missions.

I just heard something similar on a local Northern Utah A.M. radio station while driving home not more than 30 minutes ago. Something to the effect of:

"The church is opening 4 new INTERNATIONAL missions!!!"

Nothing mentioned about mission closings and consolidations...
