The Church is broadcasting that it “helped quell the spread of covid”

Post by IHAQ »

The latest edition of the World Report, a biannual compilation of news from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is now available on Church Newsroom and YouTube.
The October 2021 edition shares how Latter-day Saint Charities, the humanitarian arm of the Church, helped quell the spread of COVID-19 with a $20 million donation to support UNICEF’s role in the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator.

This from an institution that cannot convince a significant portion of its own members to be vaccinated.
$20 million represents 0.33% of the interest the Church received during Covid year 2020 on one part of it’s invested funds (EPA) - the Church didn’t spend any of the received interest during 2020. Nor any of the invested capital. Not 1 cent. Why is the Church publicly patting itself on the back for spending such a relatively insignificant amount, yet keeping quiet on the eye watering gains it made in stocks and shares?

This announcement is the equivalent of a man who earned $60,000 of interest in 2020 on his liquid invested funds of $1,000,000, taking out an advert in the paper to proclaim his one-off charitable donation of $198 to UNICEF.

Working with UNICEF will raise the hackles of DezNat and the LDSFreedomForum members. That is over 30% of the US membership.

Quell. Carefully nurture an environment over many decades where the seeds of conspiracy theories would flourish, thus causing the membership to actively fight against measures to stop the spread of a virus during a global pandemic.

Let's be clear about what happened here.

The "church" did not donate anything.

Church members gave extra money to LDS Charities, who then passed those donations on to UNICEF.

From the press release:
Latter-day Saint Charities becomes the single largest private sector donor to date to support UNICEF’s ACT Accelerator and COVAX work

Worse. This is like a man hiding a bag of gold behind his back, while begging for spare change with his left hand in order to give that spare change to poor people, and then taking full credit for giving that spare change.
