midgley has a problem with sensitivity

I have previously indicated that Mauthausen is my favorite Death Camp, but for different reasons than Dan. I am aware that describing that place as my favorite annoys some people. What I mean is that my wife and I made the kids on I believe the second semester abroad in Austria all go there and have a very good look, and we have taken our own family and various friends there to see that place. I think that 330,000 went up the stack at that place.

In what way does that explain it is his "favorite."

My wife would not have a look at Poland because she feared that we would have to visit KL Auschwitz, where well over a million went up the stack. At KZ Dachau a mere 45,000 went up the stack.

I'm with Midgley's wife. I get the sense she understood his insensitivity and refused to participate.

Bottom line here, it seems increasingly clear that Midgley does not have the capacity to understand how inappropriate many of his comments are. It's not his age, as he has been like this for decades, and it not necessarily caused by his religion. Unfortunately, however, his friends in his religion have afforded him a place to behave inappropriately, confident that his misbehavior will be tolerated given his religion's bigotry. in my opinion, that's not a good thing. It is how his religion accommodates those who have sociopathic and misogynistic tendencies.

At a minimum, does anyone think there is any way to get this Mormon, this LDS church member, this emeritus BYU professor, to STOP describing Jews killed during the Holocaust as those who "went up the stack" ??????

I call it insensitivity, to be polite. A more accurate description would be to note that Louis Midgley is a crass, ill-mannered, insensitive pig.

I can't go along with that. What I do think is that Mormons who tolerate Midgley's insensitivity need to re-think their position.

What he did to Gina is way beyond insensitivity. Dan won't re-think a thing, that would be "letting the antis win."

See my remarks about Pacific Islanders, above. The problem is that with the food that had been available before they were colonized, they had a fat season and a slim season. Then came those delicious pigs and it was always a fat season. The Church is currently making a serious effort to teach a bit of WofW about shoveling food in by Pacific Islanders. There are two problems: (1) the food is really good, and (2) eating it is often a family/community affair.

The LDS church is currently engaged in the effort to 'teach' pacific islanders not to 'shovel food in'?

Out of morbid curiosity, I did a search for "up the stack" + Jew in Google to see where the term might have originated. Not much luck, but amongst the top results was another comment by Midgley in another cone of Peterson's blog posts.

I don't get why Midgley was so obsessed with visiting all of these death camps. I understand that people have hobbies, and that people's hobbies can sometimes be very strange (to me, at least). But this is weird, no? Why travel halfway across the world--in your spare time--to visit multiple Nazi death camps? And not only that, but you insist that your wife and children do so too? Plus, you demand that they "take a close look." Why? What is is that Midgley is wanting them to see? Is he saddened by these camps? Excited? Turned on? I think it's a foregone conclusion that he's obsessed with them in some way, but what he's getting out of the whole thing is hard to grasp.

If we view this through the lens of Mopologetics--and I think we must, especially given DCP's upvote of Midgley's comment--then I think certain things become clear. For one thing, Mopologists no doubt sort of admire the brutality of the death camps. Just imagine how giddy they'd be at the thought of sending John Dehlin, Jeremy Runnells, and Ed Decker to the ovens. But there is also no doubt a level of snide religious egotism buried in their enthusiasm for the concentration camps: they're "glad" at the "missionary opportunities." After all, it was Dan Peterson himself who was over at a Jewish blog (and he claims he never goes over to *other* faiths' blogs!), telling the people there to shut up with their criticism of the LDS Church doing proxy baptisms for Holocaust victims. In other words, for somebody like Midgley, knowing that "45,000 went up the stack" means that "45,000 will also get to know the fullness of the Gospel." So, yeah: he wants to see and revel in as many of these death camps as he can. DCP isn't as extreme as Midgley, but he's in the same basic ballpark.

When my wife and I lived in Austria for months, the local university people in Salzburg denied knowing a thing about Mauthausen. But they would also tell us a few minutes later that one could tell when Russian POW's were being burned since they had a better diet and the smoke had a different smell.

I think he's just a brutal pig who thinks nothing of repeating disgusting rumors. Anyone who isn't a Mormon is less than human to him, so he has no problem disparaging them.
