It goes without saying that the Church can act like an echo chamber sometimes. I've noticed that communities comprised of those who have left the faith can end up acting the same way - idolizing a few white men, repeating the same talking points, only believing evidence that supports what they want. I used to be of the opinion that it helped with "healing" after a faith crisis. Having been there myself, I know realize it is just immature.
How do we avoid falling into the same trap we did as members?

I've noticed a lot of men tend to not notice this, because they were previously part of the patriarchy inside the church. So many exmormon men have sought new leaders in a different patriarchy that makes them feel comfortable and powerful. John Dehlin, Jeremy Runnells, RFM, etc. You might think you don't idolize these men, but TBMs don't think they idolize the Q15.

As an ExMo, is it wrong for me to criticize my own community? This is the exact sort of behavior I'm worried about.

Lots of people could observe that recent ex-Mormons retain some Mormon traits in their ex-ness, and that white men find it less easy to give up attention than belief in the Priesthood. Describing the attention they get as “idolizing”, though, seems more specifically Rosebuddish. They might want to be idolized, but I don’t think most people would say that they get it.

I don't think the 'nineteen year old' realizes how recognizable comments can be:
...For someone like myself, it is alarming to leave the church and then run straight into another community that I feel makes the same errors...But I was called arrogant and condescending.
I am sensitive to the fact that people have emotional scars from leaving the church...
and
...It's in my nature to challenge authority, I'm not going to stop that after I leave the church. If my attitude isn't welcome here, I totally understand. I just want to be able to push back...
