Elder Pearson: It's Absolutely Certain The Church Will Have 1,000 Temples In Your Lifetime

Post by Everybody Wang Chung »

Elder Pearson recently told the youth that it's "absolutely certain" the Church will have 1,000 temples in their lifetime. If this is correct, there will soon be a temple for every two Stakes in the Church, and 1,000 angry communities that are forced to have a Mormon temple with a 300 foot steeple.

Why stop at 1,000 temples? I say let's make a push for every single Ward to have its very own temple. Maybe if enough temples are built, the Afore will finally be able to do the temple work for poor Frenchy.

That’s a lot of recycled names.

Google tells me,
The LDS Church has 367 temples in various phases, which includes 197 dedicated temples (190 operating and 7 previously-dedicated, but closed for renovation), 5 scheduled for dedication, 49 under construction, 1 scheduled for groundbreaking, and 115 others announced (not yet under construction).

I don’t understand what Pearson thinks the significance of the number is. It’s just a number. Temples don’t represent membership growth, they’re not a signal of activity levels. At this point Temples are like iPhones. New ones have to be announced every year, because to stop would be disastrous pr for the company.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

A minor question but I was puzzled by the backdrop of guys in white shirts and identical ties, no jackets. Is no jacket a usual thing now or just part of a staged backdrop here?

The cynic in me says that, unlike the number of members, which can only be massaged so much, the number of temples is 100% with the organization's control.

Actually, there’s an alternative program being pitched. Some Worthy members will be given one of these to be taken home and added to the top of their house. These homes, chosen by God, will become micro-temples.

All candidates for conversion will be required to have an operating bath tub, of course. A hot water tap is optional.

A thousand temples would put an enormous strain on members. They are the ones who must staff and clean them, while also feeling pressured to attend regularly. There is also the growing issue of bad PR. As with most indulgences, there is a tipping point on Nelson's building spree, and I think it's getting close.

It really bothers me that more isn’t being spent on current member needs.

Quit making members feeling guilty for using the Bishop’s Storehouse.

Hire professional janitors for the buildings.

Break into those billions to cover youth activity costs instead of requiring additional fund raisers.

If this kind of thing was happening on a regular basis, I would be much more inclined to contribute tithing.

However, not currently.
