That’s right, no black-skinned person was given an assignment to address the membership. Not one.

Only 3 women speakers, 0 black person.

Don't lose your testimony over that.
If it helps at all there were quite a few, if I remember correctly, that were Hispanic/Latino.
And an Asian or two.
Maybe next time?

Call it a hunch, but out of the thousands of historical/doctrinal issues that lead people out of the church, I'm guessing this wasn't what broke I Have Question's shelf.

You're quite right. This thread is about pointing out that the Church doesn’t practice what it preaches. In this case, Oaks recently called on members to call out racism. I’m calling it out. 47 years after the racist ban on black peoples having full fellowship in the Church, and no person of black African descent was deemed worthy enough to address the membership. And racist passages remain in The Book of Mormon. Oaks needs to get his own house in order before telling members what to do.

I think that black members of the church are doing quite well. Just my opinion.
Always the critic.

Similar to showing pregnant women the ultrasound before an abortion, I think investigators of color should be shown a video clearly laying out the history of racism in the LDS church.

The racism is still right there in the core scriptural canon. Literally in black and white. I don’t understand how a person with black skin joins a church that espouses the idea that a black skin is an ancient sign that God used to show who he had cursed.

It may have to do with gaining a testimony of Jesus Christ and the restoration of keys and authority to save.
When converts, including those of African descent, are taught the saving principles of the gospel and the efficacy of ordinances of salvation/exaltation I think they are able to work through some of the messiness of humanity mixed in with scripture and individual leaders.
Some are not able to do so. It can be a stumbling block and a hard thing.
Opposition in all things. There is a way through the trials and messiness but it requires truly seeking and understanding with hopes of finding faith in God.

MG

And still excused by LDS members, apparently.

I wouldn’t buy a used car from a racist, much less pay him 10 percent of my income and trust that he has authority from God to offer exclusive salvation rituals.
I wouldn’t buy one from a former racist either, especially if he hasn’t taken full responsibility for his past.
