In contrast to the entire global scientific community, Perego and Butler argue that uniparental DNA (mitochondrial and Y chromosome) is better suited to uncovering “deep levels of generational inheritance”. Here is the section in their book where they justify this outrageous claim.
Ironically, it is Perego and Butler who are spreading misconceptions about DNA research. It is a well-established fact than whole genome studies using autosomal DNA are far more powerful than uniparental DNA for tracing human ancestry.Complicating Factors in Genetic Inheritance
Several factors complicate measuring and tracking genetic inheritance.
First, with autosomal DNA, recombination is the biological process that reshuffles parts of the genome at each generation, which generates genetic variation in offspring. This complicates attempts to trace genetic signals back through the generations because one parent’s signal gets merged with the other parent’s, making it difficult to disentangle the two. Second, over many generations, ancestors’ signals will drop out of descendants’ DNA due to random inheritance—the chance involved in the shuffling of segments that results in certain segments being passed on or not. The difficulty of tracing ancestors’ contributions to the genome of present-day people is increasingly difficult as the number of intervening generations grows.
Second, there is a random chance of inheritance with autosomal DNA. In other words, each parent can transmit to each child one or the other of the two DNA sequences that she/he got from her/his parents. This is what allows children with the same parents to have different DNA compositions from one another. This also means that a specific allele from a parent (and by extension from more distant ancestors) may be lost to that portion of the family tree.
Third, occasional spontaneous changes in our DNA, called mutations, happen both randomly and due to environmental factors. These mutations can change the allele that is passed on to the next generation. For example, while a parent may possess an STR allele of 15, their offspring may inherit a 14 or a 16. These are known as copy errors. The greater the number of markers tested, the more likely a mutation will be observed. Markers can have wildly different mutation rates—STRs mutate more than 100,000 times more rapidly than SNPs.
While mutations impact both autosomal DNA and uniparental markers, the latter are not subjected to recombination or random inheritance issues and are thus better suited in making “long-distance” associations into the deep levels of generational inheritance (italics added).
Perego is plainly being dishonest to his Mormon audience, because in a paper he coauthored with John Lindo (2017) he has acknowledged the superiority of autosomal DNA in population genomic studies. Mitochondrial DNA analysis had previously suggested significant population replacement or external gene flow in Pacific Northwest populations during the last 10,300 years. However, analysis of autosomal DNA from four ancient individuals revealed that there was genetic continuity throughout the entire period. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28377518/
Ugo Pergo says one thing in a scientific setting and then the opposite in a Mormon setting.
Ugo Perego also likes to focus attention on how much autosomal DNA is lost in our ancestry. He has previously claimed that a person’s genomic DNA only retains DNA from about 12 percent of their 1,024 genealogical ancestors at ten generations. https://rsc.BYU.edu/reason-faith/findin ... a-analysis. In their latest apologetics Butler and Perego claim “It is increasingly likely around 6+ generations back that you have no DNA in your genome at all from many of your ancestors in that generation.”
Both claims are grossly misleading. According to David Reich, the Harvard professor who discovered Denisovan DNA in our ancestry, we are likely to carry DNA from about 500 of our 10th generation ancestors and from all 64 of our 6th generation ancestors. https://heb.fas.harvard.edu/publication ... human-past

While making these spurious DNA claims, Ugo Perego neglects to mention that mitochondrial DNA is derived from just one of our 1,024 genealogical ancestors at ten generations ago. By this metric alone autosomal DNA is 500 times more powerful than mitochondrial DNA. While the autosomal DNA of only 4 individuals was studied in the Lindo paper, the scientists were effectively screening 2,000 (4 x 500) ancestors of those four individuals.
I guess some things that Ugo Perego knows are true, are not very useful for Mormons.
