Programming.

Post by _Imwashingmypirate »

Hey, I discovered last night that next yar I have to learn a programming language and will be asked to program a fractal. I was told I will need to download a compliler and during the summer I should get to know a program that begins with 'p', I forgot th name. But we will be using fortran and should know stuff about "C".

Is programming hard? Could anyone possibly give me some pointers please?

I was so shocked at the complexity of next year. We will be studying all sorts including Matrices. So I have a lot to do in summer.

I couldn't remember the recommended complier, but I have downloaded Gentee, visual basics and C#. I think it will take quite a while to work out.

The language beginning with a 'p' is probably Pascal. You can find free online tutorials here:

http://www.thefreecountry.com/documenta ... scal.shtml

Other online tutorials for C etc are here:

http://www.programmingtutorials.com/

And so far as printed books are concerned, see the 'For Dummies'series.

Matrices are not difficult. They are just a very systematic way of writing down certain operations (such as what happens to the coordinates of points on an object when you rotate or translate it.) Try this very useful book - which has lots of worked examples:

Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Matrix Operations (Paperback)
by Richard Bronson

http://www.amazon.com/Schaums-Outline-T ... 679&sr=1-1

But what on earth are you doing seeking advice on this forum? Don't you get book recommendations with your course materials? And what about using Google? Just try 'Pascal online tutorial' for instance. You will find all the information you need out there, if you will only learn to look.

It is not Pascal's I would have remembered that.

I have been on google. I downloaded some software, but for some reason tey are duff and not installing properly so will have to get rid of them and find something else.

I haven't recieved course guidelines because I am not there yet, but I have the whole summer and I want to get ahead so that I don't get lost.

Don't those courses have websites you can visit now for this year or previous years? Don't those websites tell you which programs to download and how to set things up?

It's Python, thanks. I don't start till October but want to get ahead during summer so I am not drowning when term starts.

Regarding my name. I plan to sort my blogs and then just have this one, although I do really like JonasS.
