Uh huh. So because the international community of scientists agree there is climate change, because it's obvious, it's a cult. But A-Mike's "independent Institute" -- and I guarantee everyone A-Mike hasn't watched that full 1.5 hour video -- is based entirely on Fred Singer, a rogue physicist who spent his career bullying for right-wing politics. So he's got one guy. And that's NOT a cult.

Singer's best known effort was denying the toxicity of side-stream smoke. I'm sure A-Mike the "health nut" is totally into that also. I think I recall back in high school, there was a push to ban indoor smoking as much as possible. Rush Limbaugh was raking in the bucks having meltdowns over this. So what better than to have a corrupt scientist lie and say that indoor smoking isn't unhealthy for anybody?

Won't touch a garden-fresh tomato because it's toxic, but the only thing better than chugging cattle-grade Ivermectin straight from the container at the feed store, is bringing it back to drink in the smokiest bar in town.

Exactly right! No well informed, fully scientifically literate individual takes Fred Singer seriously, although he will remain the darling of hate mongering and disinformation promoting organizations like The Heritage Foundation, the same extreme right wing organization that, at the behest of the Tobacco Industry, tried their darnedest to debunk the damning evidence of how dangerous tobacco smoking was for our health.

SUMMARY
Since its founding, the Heritage Foundation has become “inextricably intertwined” with Republican administrations and lawmakers in Washington. Heritage brands itself as a beacon of the intellectual conservative establishment; in reality, it is an organization that regularly spouts hateful ideas on par with organizations like the Family Research Council (FRC), which has earned designation from the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. Much like its peer groups, Heritage dedicates significant energy to extremist policy recommendations that hinder access to abortion and birth control and promote discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.

These extremist policy positions have had an outsized influence on the Trump administration. As reported in the New York Times Magazine, Heritage developed a massive database of conservatives — many of them current staffers or alums of the think tank — to staff the Trump administration. These individuals, who are connected to Heritage and currently serve in the administration, maintain relationships with the think tank and likely serve as back channels to influence policy — which has been closely mirrored between the two entities since Trump took office.

EXTREMISM
Despite claiming to conduct “accurate research,” Heritage supports extremist policies and misleading information.

“Merchants of doubt” (MODs) are people or organizations who create the impression that scientific findings that threaten their agenda or ideology are unsettled or flat-out wrong. The goal is to stave off regulation to keep the economy free.

The tobacco industry pioneered techniques for manufacturing doubt when scientists discovered that smoking caused cancer, and other MODs had been attacking science using the same techniques ever since.

Four notable individual merchants of doubt—Fred Seitz, William Nierenberg, Robert Jastrow, and Fred Singer—were involved in doubt-mongering multiple scientific questions from the 1960s-2000s. All of them were media-savvy, well-connected, politically powerful, fiercely anti-Communist physicists (though none of them did much original science after 1970—they wrote reviews or editorials, but didn’t publish much in peer-reviewed journals).

Leave it to Atlanticmike to start a thread promoting the climate views of one of the most thoroughly and widely discredited (if not disgraced) scientists on earth. The same guy who worked with the equally discredited Heritage Foundation attempting to dishonestly discredit the health hazards of tobacco smoking on behalf of the Tobacco Industry.

Thousands of people obtain PhDs in physics every year. There are thousands of physics professors in the world. I really like to think that the subtlety and objectivity of physics tend to make people humble and careful, but even if that's true, there are so many of us that a few are still bound to be kooks.

So you can never just assume that one person must be right just because they have some distinguished scientific credentials. I had never heard of Fred Singer before, but it sure does look as though he was a crank.
