Also, what's the rationale for shooting at someone because you think they stole a package? My first thought was 'just call the police if you think something is happening.' According to the report, when the driver called the police to report someone was shooting at and chasing him, the police dispatcher told him that they had just received a 'suspicious person' report at an address in that neighborhood. There is absolutely no reason to involve oneself once the report is made. This vigilantism and casual mis-use of guns is ridiculous. The fact that the police took 8 days to take any action is also inexcusable.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm curious if we've been suffering from the fatigue of so many news stories like this that we've become immune to them. It took 8 days for cops to take action probably because, well, it is Mississippi.

I did read that FedEx had put the driver on unpaid leave, but then reinstated the driver and retroactively paid him for the time. That's a step in the right direction, but the police action was pretty abysmal.

And if I were a parent of kids in that neighborhood, I'd be pretty upset that a neighbor would risk my kids' lives by recklessly discharging a weapon on a residential street. Over the possibility of a stolen package.

One thing I’ve noticed since moving to Small Town USA is just how paranoid many white folks here are. Cameras, camera notices stuck to their fences, No Trespassing signs, neighborhood watch signs, ‘you better watch out you criminals’ signs, all sorts of crap to go along with their black ‘give no quarter’ flags and Trump/FJB/LGB flags. They act like they have a million dollars worth of gold bullion stuffed under their beds or something. Half the homes that have these signs are garbage traps. It’s the strangest thing.

It’s no surprise to me that yokels, as civilization creeps towards them, are freaking out. Fox News+guns+brainsdeadbingers = FedEx drivers getting shot, apparently.

Anyway. I agree FedEx or their subcontractors need to provide signage and a recognizable uniform for their delivery drivers. Hell, my BIL who is one of those subcontractors for Amazon has his employees wear Amazon uniforms, and he’s a half retarded Mormon.

So true. This reminds me of an incident from a month ago, my wife took me to a property she wanted to know if it was worth flipping. Long story short, it wasn't.

The driveway was a 300 yd graveled easement shared by three other neighboring properties covered in trees. I thought we had stumbled on the filming set for Deliverance (which actually took place in Georgia). Each property had placards posted on trees before, during and while entering their front yards. All of them were threatening to kill anyone who trespassed and one of them said something to the effect that their private property wasn't worth risking your life over. Boy was that true. These people had the crappiest excuse for a human habitat I had ever seen. Initially I couldn't even tell if it was an actual house or a trailer sitting on concrete blocks because the flooring was so unsettled and the bottom of the "house" was covered in sheets of vinyl. I couldn't think of a single item in that tiny house that was something anyone would steal or could pawn for actual money except for the guns hanging on every wall. Everything outside was old, rusted or broken, and the inside wasn't much better.

It was an older woman, way overweight, talking about how her brother technically owns the house but they're not on speaking terms because she didn't pay him rent because her disability was canceled, etc etc. This was a sad person, she didn't take care of herself at all, even her pets looked liked they hadn't eaten in weeks. But she had money for cigs, because she was chain smoking while we were there. She had no kids, and was not in contact with her only family. The one thing that seemed to bring some kind of meaning in her life was the television. And she had it blasting the FOX Business channel for some reason. I could be wrong, but I highly doubt she's into trading stocks.

Indeed. These people deserve to go to prison for their beliefs that their guns protect their community. Politicians who promote guns are just doing it to get votes, and I'll admit it's a good as a strategy. It's unlikely any of them really believe in guns or would ever really use a gun themselves in "self-defense".

They should also have their permits taken away. Do we really want gun happy morons with poor judgment walking the streets armed?
