Some Great Music You May or May Not Have Heard

Post by Wonhyo »

The music fan in me is happy whenever I stumble upon a great band or artist that I had not previously known about or listened to. Bands and artists (rock, alternative, country, indie) that fly under the radar and will not be played on mainstream radio and perhaps not even on underground radio…

One of the good things about being a music fan in the age of streaming services is that there are - at our fingertips - so many great, creative bands and artists which, in decades past, we’d have never realistically had the chance of hearing. Yes, we can bicker about the loss of the LP age, etc., but generally, I believe we live in an amazing time for music.

Here are a few bands and artists, in no particular order, that I’ve recently discovered and that may be worth a listen - at high volume with good headphones - with YouTube links to a representative song. Perhaps you’ve already heard of some or all of these, but to me these are new and welcome discoveries, drops in the ocean of outstanding music I’ve yet to discover.

Please feel free to post your own awesome musical suggestions. Rock on!

1. Slowdive - a British band that had some influence on the shoegazing scene of the 1990s. Like a fine wine or an artisan cheese, they’ve gotten better with age. Check out their song “Star Roving” for a taste of how they can move your mind: https://youtu.be/ogCih4OavoY

2. Folly and the Hunter – a French Canadian group that apparently broke up in 2018, but that has left the world with some great songs. Here is a link to their song “Ghost”: https://youtu.be/rf_QHGta3o0

3. No Clear Ending – an American indie band that doesn’t appear to even have an album, but their song “All Hallows” will affect almost all your senses: https://youtu.be/UmGygoHZGXI

4. Faun Fables – a duo from the Bay Area that has left the world a better place than they found it. Please give “The Country House Waits” a listen: https://youtu.be/SjKgw_Y8yd4

5. In the Valley Below – an American group that should be played on the radio everywhere. Their song “Peaches” is a good example of what they can do behind their instruments: https://youtu.be/L4zbFEHZbOU

6. The War on Drugs – don’t know much about them, but we all need to be seeing them live soon. Here is “Red Eyes”: https://youtu.be/1LmX5c7HoUw

7. Dead Can Dance – an Australian duo that defies classification. They take all the time they need to make their musical statements. “Children of the Sun” will leave you wanting more: https://youtu.be/1Z4uITELiqw

8. The Dead Cowboys – Dr. David Bokovoy and the band can do no wrong. If you live in the Great American West, please find a way to go to see them when they’re gigging. Then, return and report. (We can’t all live in Utah now, can we?) Here is “Sweet Love”, with Doc Bok on guitar and vocals: https://youtu.be/xxTM9xyUjEQ

9. Yaima – why isn’t this duo from North Carolina world-freaking-famous?!? Here is “Gajumaru”: https://youtu.be/qTse2hkPxYU

10. Lord Huron – a Michigan indie-folk outfit that has changed my grey matter with their song “Ends of the Earth”: https://youtu.be/-MH-UmYkXiM

I just listened to "Back from Japan" and it's great! And I love the music video, that low-fi video. I've just put Connor Leimer into my rotation, Analytics. Thanks very much!
