I'm curious if anyone uses a news aggregator site as part of your media consumption? I recently decided to try one I've seen advertised on various sites and appreciate it. But getting the most from it requires a subscription. I didn't mind signing up but I am not in favor of a world where the almost necessary task of staying informed is behind a paywall. Curious what others use if anything?

The one I started using is ground.news in case an example of what I'm talking about helps. (edited: corrected page name)

The latter is similar to what I have been doing. And I try to use substacks and following different folks but it becomes more information than I could realistically track.

The Republican Party that I used to know and be a member of would have, from the beginning, vehemently condemned in no uncertain terms Russia's invasion of Ukraine and would never have tried to put a positive spin on Putin's actions, like Trump did!

I just use google news, which provides stories from multiple sources. I need this, because for me to believe anything, I need to read it from several different sources (and hear it from several different points of view, unfortunately, just to derive the actual facts of the story).

If only one outlet is running the story, I'm extremely skeptical, whether I'd like to believe what's written or not.

I will open up an incognito tab, and just type in "News" into the bar. It gives me a mix of international, national, and local news from a wide array of sources. I don't know how the algorithm ultimately chooses what to boost, but I figure by using an incognito tab, I prevent it learning from what I click on and then echo-chambering me. I'll get stuff from all of the major largely reputable news outlets (CBC, Reuters, AP, BBC, Al Jazeera), but also right-wing propaganda tabloids like NY Post as well as some small regional news outlets intermixed.

As an example for the source spread, right now I did it, and got Fox, BBC, NPR, Washington Post, The Independant, NYT, Newsweek, and CNBC. I also got a regional outlet in the "top stories" results ("Voice of OC," which appears to be for Orange County, CA).

I haven't really found any aggregators that I love but I'll check out ground.news. I use some heavy curation on my browser's homepage to just bring in my more trusted source sites for headlines and then dive in deeper when interested. Like you I've got several substacks I'm following but honestly the noise ratio has gotten very high. I've mostly resigned myself to shutting a lot of it out and just trying to stay as plugged in to local as I can... sphere of influence and all that.

I'll echo the good Dr. Steuss's comments and take it up a notch. If you aren't using a private browser for your news searching (or really all searching) I highly recommend it. I use DuckDuckGo to try to keep as much of the targeted stuff to a minimum as I can and I can feel the difference any time I'm forced into something like Chrome.
