This is going in an odd direction. Entertaining, but weird. Like “I’ll be needing to see the results of that background investigation” weird, all because shotguns might have a kick.

I do like me my weird directions.

This one’s prompted by Hound’s assertion that Doc’s “statements about weapons almost conclusively proves he wasn't” in the military. I’d like to determine the specifics of Hound’s possible military experience and expertise that would support that statement. So far there’s no meat given and too much milk, and it’s skim, at that.

For the record, I’d say that there are plenty of shotguns with a kick. And there are models with much less so than others. Then we can toss in the many variables exhibited by both shotgun and shooter. Certainly, it’s fascinating watching someone spend a few days and several dozen posts trying to disparage another person based on a statement made 10 years ago about whether or not shotguns have a kick.

Who knows what juicy crime will be revealed next. : )

I’m beginning to suspect the shotgun isn’t really the point here. Hound appears to be building what he sees as a reflection of how people on this board treat Peterson. If so, I admire the commitment. We’re several dozen posts into United States v. DrCamNC4Me and still litigating recoil.

Oh, he’s been on this rant for about 5 years, now. In one of his other forms and during a time when the board had no active mods, Hound apparently took offense at a tiff between Doc and another fellow (known for his rabid anti-gay attitude and claim that there is no proof that Jews were gassed in WWII), over Doc’s parody of the other fellow performing fellatio on a sexual organ exhibiting the shape of a fungus.

I’m sure that Hound will repeat that conversation here, given enough time. Doc has already been living in his head since then.

Obviously shotguns have some recoil. That’s just physics. You wouldn’t want to fire one with the butt on the end of your nose. Their recoil is very little compared to that of high-powered rifles, however.

I’ve only fired a shotgun a couple of times, but I remember how astonished I was, the first time, by how slight the recoil was, compared to the 7.62mm rifles to which I was accustomed. The shotgun felt like a partridge-killing magic wand and not a firearm at all.

To people who are used to rifles bigger than .22 caliber rimfire, shotguns have no kick.

Breachers in the unit use a shortened shotgun with a pistol grip and they don’t typically put it into their shoulders when firing. They kind of hold it out or down and at an angle if memory serves. There’s not a lot of kick, and this is why I used the bullpup for home defense.

At the end of the day everyone has a preferred home or self-defense weapon and what works best is what works for you. I mean, a dog idiot like droopy tits will just have his life partner do the work for him because he’s an old maid, but others will want an option outside of a brokeback beagle.

A bit off topic but, I'd say, my first choice for middle of the night home defense would be a scatter-gun. The only prob being, it must be kept loaded and handy at all times, which isn't really optimal when one has grandkids or, whatever around. I keep a 38 special in a false bottom nightstand drawer by the bed.

As to recoil. I have a really old Remington 16 gauge, single shot that has more kick than some 12's. I'm guessing it has a bit to do with weight and no mechanisms to absorb some of the recoil

Excellent point. When I went through my gun safety training it was emphasized, over and over and over, that the rules that seemed redundant and repetitive were absolutely necessary because no matter how careful you are there is still a human element (or combination of human elements) that cannot be 100% predicted.

I’ve never lived in a place where I or anyone I knew felt the need to keep a loaded gun within reach for home defense. I’ve lived in a couple of US states, and in five other countries.

I’m really sorry for people who feel they need those loaded guns. I hope you realize that other places aren’t like that. Perhaps you could move?
