As to the movie:

While I thought it was fairly good (despite the fact that the Ann-Margaret and Oliver Reed couldn't sing to save their lives) I thought it made fun of the original album (which is one of my alltime faves). The cartoonish colors and stuff made the movie just a little to nuts for me. Plus it takes about 8 watching (not to mention another 8 listenings to the album) to figure out what the hells going on with the story. But Daultrey still kills in the lead role (Jesus that guy got ripped in the 70s) and the guest stars (John, Turner, Clapton) rock and don't forget the unknown star-Jack Nicholson!!! Honestly how can you dislike a movie that has Jack!!! (Even if he can't sing)

Edit again: overall the story has a pretty good message about false prophets religion in general. It also has some excellent songs besides all the songs created to hold the story together.

Jersey Girl, thanks for the pics, I missed half the movie. I think I'm gonna have to get that off Netflix. I missed the preacher and the acid queen...and blinked and missed what it was that made the crowd worshipping Tommy to revolt.

Bond, I caught it about the time when the uncle was molesting Tommy. How I wish I had seen it from the beginning.

I haven't seen the Rocky Horror Picture show in its entirety, so that may have to be on my list too.

I was watching I think it was AMC during halloween a few years back, and they had the top 100 scariest films of all time, and there was one, and old 70s film about some ballet dancers who were staying in an old house, and they were all being picked off one by one...it started with an "S"...I think. I can't remember what it's called, but I want to see it.

Edit: I found the movie I was looking for, it's called Suspiria. Anyone seen that? C'mon, be my movie critics! The pay is awful, but the rewards are otherwise plentiful...

GIMR,

Might I suggest that you find the CD of Tommy (the original) and listen to that first. If the cover is the same as the LP version, there's some background for the story in it. Then watch the movie. I haven't seen the movie version, I just remember some of the cast.

Jersey Girl

p.s. I included a line from the lyrics of America Pie because you seem to be of a much younger generation than me and while you might have heard American Pie, I thought I'd throw in some connections for you.

You think you can get that on Itunes?

I went on wikipedia, and read up on the differences between the CD and the movie. The two world wars, and what else, the dad killing the stepad in the CD instead of vice versa in the movie?

Have you seen/read A Clockwork Orange?

I don't know if you can get Tommy in Itunes, keep in mind that it's an entire album. I don't know if Itunes carries full albums? It's considered a rock classic, GIMR, so you should be able to find it. I'm more than certain that places like Best Buy would sell it on CD since they have other classics such as the Beatles White Album now on CD.

I saw A Clockwork Orange years ago (probably when it came out!) haven't read a book by that title though. If I recall correctly, it was something like a bad acid trip on film.

I like off beat stuff too, GIMR, for example the Stones are and always have been one of my favorite rock groups. I always preferred them to the Beatles. Just incase you are interested and don't know, Keith Richards (Lead Guitar for the Stones) is going to make a cameo appearance as Grant Sparrow, father of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp *sigh*) in the upcoming Pirates film.

Yeah. Keith Moon (the real life drummer----and one of the alltime crazy rock and rollers) played Uncle Ernie. Catching the first half of the movie might have explained why Tommy was deaf, dumb, and blind too.

Absolutely. It's freaky awesome.

I'm not the biggest fan of horror movies but Halloween, The Omen, The Exorcist are great. Suspiria is weird. Some Italian guy made it. I always remember the beginning poem:

Roses are red
Violet's are blue
But the iris is the flower
That'll be the end of you
Suspiria!

(all while a wigged skull has it's hair combed. Talk about freaky)

Rocky Horror Show, James. There's something despicably inviting about that. You know it's rotten but you're some how drawn to it. Kinda like Jagger. ;-)

There are some changes. And the play (it was on Broadway for a while) had more changes. I go with the album though. I can't stand the singers in the movie (except for the good ones), and they changed some of the lyrics around. I found the movie to have way to much Christian symbolism in it for my taste. Every cross shape they used. By the Acid Queen Part I'm like, "enough, we get it. Jesus=Tommy).

Edit: For further Who listenings, try "Who's Next" and the Live albums. Their live songs sound way different than the album versions. For example "My Generation" is 2 or 3 minutes. In concert they stretched it out to more than 15 minutes on "Live at Leeds". Or Quadrophenia (another rock opera).

Did I mention I like The Who?

I don't know why anyone thinks this is disturbing.

by the way, that's Roger Daltrey (as Tommy) to the left of Clapton.

And the rest of the band plays the backup priests. That's a statue of Marilyn Monroe in the background. No clue on if anyone ever worshiped her (but they did in the movie).

It also helps insomniacs get through the night. They use to show it all the time. For insomniacs I also recommend:

The Blues Brothers
Shawshank Redemption (not comedy but it's freaky crazy how much its on, or at least used to be on)
Dumb and Dumber
and comedies-------all comedy all the time
