I honestly ouldn't bother with any "sports supliments" at all, Jersey. None of that crap is regulated or tested, and any of the "nutrients" you might get from them would be supplied by simply eating a healthy and well balanced diet. About the only "suppliment" I ever use is whey protien shake mix and occasionally the high-protien meal replacement bars (I save those for when I'm not going to be around the house and able to fix a meal). Most of those dietary suppliments are the modern day equivelent of snake oil.

That being said...

What sort of diet are you looking for? Are you after wieghtlose, muscle gain, speeding up your metabolism? Also, what sort of exercise program are you going to use (if any), help help the diet shed the weight?

Oh, yeah, echoing what has already been said... Drink water and eat some fruits.

Proper hydration is very important to maintaining physical health. An easy why to tell if you're properly hydrated is to look at the color of your pee after you use the bathroom. If it's clear or vbery slightly yellowish, you're good. If it's yellow, you're a quart of two low. If it's orange or darker, your body is dehydrated and you need to drink water stat.

Also, as much as not enough water can hurt or even kill you, so can to much. Drinking to much water can cause a condition called hyponatremia, or water-intoxication (I swear, I'm not making this up), where the chemicals yourcentral nevous system uses to operate are so diluted that it interupts brain and CNS funtion. Over-hydration and water intoxication can produce neurological symptoms such as altered personality, and disoriented behavior. Water intoxication can also result in convulsions, circulatory shock, coma, and death.

So limit your intake of water to around half a quart an hour with a four to six quart max if your not doing anything to heavy. If you working harder and sweating good, up the intake to as needed (check your pee color). If your working heard outdoors in hot weather, up your intake to 1-1/5quarts/hour with an 8-10 quart max.

Also, make sure you drink something like gatoraid a couple of times a day (best time is with meals) to keep your electrolyte levels where they need to be.

Anyways, hope that helps. You got any questions or need some advice on exercise/diet just ask away, Jersery.

1) Water
2) Many light meals
3) Nuts
4) No potato chips/chocolate
5) Try to avoid binges (I know they happen....but remember to cut down the next couple of days so you can keep an even keel)
6) Exercise
7) No Soda (and if you must....drink Diet)
8) Did I mention water (or fruit juices/powerade/green tea....eliminate soda)
9) More exercise
10) Make sure you sleep

PS Offtopic: Mr. Coffee did you see that story where a radio show hosted a competition over the phone seeing how quickly a person could drink 2 gallons of water? A woman actually died of water poisoning trying to win the competition. Quite creepy.

The "Hold Your Wee And Win A Wii" stunt. Everyone involved with that contest should be charged with manslaughter at the very least. As for the woman that died, I'd put her up for a Darwin Award, except she'd already managed to polute the human genome by having children... Sorry, but I just can't seem to have any sympathy for the woman. Stupid kills, but not nearly enough.

Guys on the thread

I'm thinking about things like adding Wheat Germ...natural stuff.

This isn't about weight loss per se...I could lose 10 pounds but that will happen rather effortlessly as it usually does for me. I don't go on "diets". I typically cut back on some things and "move" more. Does that make sense?

I'm thinking in terms of increasing energy and strength and I already know how to do it.

I'm asking about natural supplements...does anyone use them...for what purpose and do you think they help you? If so, in what way?

Thanks for the responses!

Jersey Girl

p.s. coffee...I live at 7800ft I literally HAVE to drink water! And I agree with you about that woman in the contest...what a dumbass. Uh, make that dead dumbass and yes, the sponsors of the contest should be charged!

Someone already mentioned whey protein. I take that, and then every now and then, i'll take creatine for about 8 weeks. But I have no idea if that's 'ok' for women.

I don't really have sympathy for her either....it's creepy that there are people out there dumb enough to not realize that drinking 2 gals of water in a couple of minutes isn't exactly the smartest thing to do. And I think the contest people should be charged with whatever they can including for all the other people in the contest.

I'll repeat what I said previously. Suppliments do not work. They are all snake oil. All of it is a completely pointless waste of money. If someone tells you otherwise, punch them in the crotch and then demand they show actual medical stuidies that shows their snake oil is actually benificial.

The only exception is stuff like protien suppliments, and that's only because I'd give myself a heart attack if I ate the meat needed to get the ammount of protien I need as I'm getting old(er) and it's getting a little harder each year to maintain my musclemass.

That's simply not true. Steroids work. Prohormones work. creatine works. I've spent the last 4 years using different types of supplements. And creatine definitely works. There are plenty of supplements that work. You just have to sift through the garbage to find them.

Steriods and prohormones aren't unregulated suppliments either. Both are controlled substances that require FDA approval for a drug manufacturer to make them and an MD to perscribe them to you.

Also, WTF do you need creatine for? Untill you get around my age or older, a healthy diet will provide your body with more creatine then it can fully use.

What sorts of supplements are good to add to one's diet? Not Cheetos, of course.

Heroin usually does the trick for those unwanted pounds.

Just contact your local "alternative pharmacist" and get yourself a few sterilized needles.

It will also get rid of that pesky false reality southern baptists wrap themselves around.
