Re: GAAC ALERT! Democrat National Convention begins
I'm still undecided. I've always liked McCain, and I voted for him in the 2000 primaries in New Hampshire. I also have liked listening to Obama, and I have a lot of respect for Joe Biden.
Probably the biggest thing I don't really like about Obama right now is that he kind of hung his hat on the "we failed utterly in Iraq and it's time to cut our losses and pull out right now" argument, and since he started this and got all the anti-war people on his side, the tables have turned and now it looks like we're going to be able to withdraw from Iraq in a year or two having actually won, and with a viable Iraqi government in control of the country and the likes of Al Qaeda in Iraq on the run and despised by most Iraqis.
In other words, you really don't hear Obama saying how badly we've failed in Iraq anymore, but he just cannot admit that we may actually have pulled this one off.
I know a lot of mistakes were made, and Bush basically did lie to get us into the war. I know, I know, we thought Saddam had the WMD, but we had good intel telling us he didn't have them anymore and Bush's folks just contorted and papered over it to justify going to war. The bottom line is they wanted to go to war, and the WMD were a convenient pretext for it, until it became an inconvenient pretext, and then they basically lied and went to war on that pretext anyhow. The problem I have with this is that I acknowledge that something needed to be done about Saddam. We just didn't go about it the best way we could have, but I'm not sure I could have done any better at the time.
So in other words, I supported the war when it started, and I supported seeing it through, and I simply don't believe the Democratic mantra of "we failed in Iraq", because we haven't failed in Iraq. It really troubles me that Obama is so tied to the "Iraq failure" mantra, because I really want to like him.
I don't know much about his economic policies. I'd like to know more. There's a lot I don't like about the Republican policies anymore though, so I'm really in the air on this one.
And I'm kind of for "sticking it" to the Christian Right who'd like nothing more than the opportunity to try to put more right-wing justices on the Supreme Court. Ironically, I've liked Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito so far. I think Chief Justice Roberts was a major coup by Pres. Bush, and I think history will eventually show him to have been an excellent Chief Justice. He's not nearly as bad as the Democrats feared, and he's not nearly as bad as the Christian Right wanted.
Anyhow, I could go either way in this election. I don't know when I'll have my mind made up.

Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Al Qaeda in Iraq always were a small group of mostly foreigners despised by most Iraqis. They always were a small part of the problem. I think it is far too early to predict stability in Iraq without a US presence. There has not been much political progress during the period of relative decrease in violence. It's not like we've stopped paying militias not to shoot us and each other. What happens when we do?

The constitution of liberty (as Heyek called it) is under sustained and relentless attack as never before, and while the Republican party has corrupted itself and moved away from the founding principles of the country to an alarming degree, the Fabian/Gramsian modern Democratic party is a lethal retrovirus inserted into the body politic that is quite capable (and more than desirous) of undoing virtually the entire republican, democratic nature of American society in the name of the very same cry (or whine) of "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" that roared from the lips of the Jacobins more than two centuries ago.
Enjoy the cornucopia of intellectual vacuity and ersatz public moral posturing...all in good fun, or course.
Oh, one of the proponents of the Democratic Party's holy sacrement - legal infanticide - just spoke.
Yup, same old Democratic Party we all know and love.

Uhhh, yeahhh. Have you had a glimpse of Obama policy? McCain isn't my ideal candidate, but a fair shake more competent than the Obamanation. I know, I've been living in the People's Republic of Illinois for far too long under his failed little weltanschauung.Angus McAwesome wrote:I'm probably going to end up voting for Obama simply because the idea of having a guy that managed to lose 5 US Navy aircraft scares the f*** out of me. I mean, the one he lost when he got shot down and the USS Forrestal incident weren't his fault, but it's the other three that make me go "Who's the dumbass that gave that guy the ok to fly?" Yeah, McCain's an Annapolis Grad, but he was 854 out of a class of 859, so academically this guy wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed either. So basically we'd be voting in an older, dumber, and if you can imagine it, a more prone to incompetence man then Bush if McCain gets into the White House. Seriously, GOP, can you guys stop giving us candidates you think will appeal to the common American and give us someone actually qualified to lead for a change? Because let's face it, the last guy we want in charge of the single largest arsenal of deployed nuclear weapons is someone who was a worse pilot then Dubya and an even bigger partying fratboy douche.
There was a time I voted democrat. Unfortunately, its increasinly become the party of wealth redistribution, abortion on demand (no such thing as a "reasonable restriction", ask Obama), gun-grabbing hysteria, and ever-expanding gubbmint programs.

You certainly sound like a former Democrat, Mr. Hannity.

Go ahead and name some specific policy of Obama's you disagree with and we'll argue it.

Are you high? McCain can't even remember how many homes he and his wife own. Reagan didn't get that senile until well after he left office and the Alzheimers progressed a good deal.

Can you name some specific actions by Obama during his tenure as Illinois Senator that where the sole cause of all these bad things in your state you keep hinting at?

Only complacent morons vote on a candidate because of the party they belong to.

The Democrats have ALWAYS been like that and you just now figured it out? You really are a sharp one.

Yeah, because the government has no obligation at all to care for it's citizens, amirite. Go compare notes with Drippy, guy. Maybe between the two of you you guys might finally make an actual argument.

Didn't he call his wife a C U next Tuesday in front of a couple of journalists?

Ever since the first season of the Man Show, dude.

Yeah, because governments that actually care about the well being of the citizens they serve make the Baby Jesus cry... Really makes you wonder how it is that "christians" out there like Drippy LaDouche seem to have missed all the good stuff Jesus preached about caring about your fellow man and charity, GoodK.
