A strange thread title.

A bizarre mention of three specific people, and only three, in the body of your OP.

Other than those two perplexing things, I am fine either way, but for what it's worth, I lean in favor of needing a moderator or moderators.

I'm not sure you should take that away from ajax. It appears he thrives on it, which is why I throw him a bone occasionally.

I think it's a great offer, Jersey Girl, but I'd defer to the new moderator(s) as to whether to perform surgery or move a whole thread. If it were me, which it won't be, I wouldn't mind at all spending a few hours on the V&T and other threads with lots of substance to bring then into conformity with the Paradise rules. As long as we get uniform application of the rules going forward, I'm happy with whatever the new powers that be decide to do with the past.

It's not the only offer that has come out of my device in the past couple of weeks. I wouldn't spend my own time splitting it much less would I ask for anyone else to do it. I want it moved to Prison. It belongs in Prison.

Uh, did anyone here seriously conclude that Shades was proposing to enforce the rules only when people interact with Ajax? He clearly used Ajax as an example. Shades appears to have a concern that the people calling for enforcement of rules will complain when the rules are applied equally to them. I understand his concern, but I think it's misplaced.

Human nature being what it is, some people will take offense at being moderated, even when the moderation consists of moving their posts from one thread to another. Tobin, who thrived on posting insults, left the board after exactly one of his posts was moved from Paradise to Prison. (This was before my time as moderator, so I'm not telling tales out of school here.) I've seen the exact same thing happen on other boards.

Having been a moderator here and elsewhere, I can say with confidence that people will react differently to moderation. Some will take great umbrage. Some will be just fine with it. Some will apologize. Some will object to moderator decisions that don't involve their posts, while others will only address moderation when it involves their posts. Some will discuss moderation issues to death and some will never discuss them at all. In other words, people are people and to expect them not to act like people do when someone else has control over their words is unrealistic.

For the most part, people will conform their behavior to the rules as enforced. Not as written -- as enforced. In those few cases where they don't, Shades has the queue and the ban hammer to use as he sees fit. But, in my opinion, there is no point in having rules if they aren't enforced. That has nothing to do with people complaining about how they are enforced. That simply comes with the territory, and its up to Shades (since moderators must be a clone of Shades) to decide how to deal with complaints.

My own personal style of interacting with moderators is to handle any questions, objections or issues to a moderation action that involves me through PMs. I really hate seeing a good, substantive thread derailed because someone disagrees with how a moderator did something or didn't do something in a thread. But that's just me.

The framework of rules that Shades has assembled is, in my opinion, the best set of rules I"ve seen that maximizes free speech without allowing trolling to overwhelm substantive discussion. With few exceptions, like doxxing or posting private communications, you can say anything you want here, as long as you say it in the right place. If you're a person who thinks it's your personal calling to control the content of other adults' speech, you're not going to like it here. Because the speech you want to control isn't going away. It's just moving to a different section of the board.

I hear you. That gets into the whole issue of deference to the thread starter. Which I really have no opinion on other than making whatever the rule or standard is going to be clear.
