You do well to put those words in quotes. In fact the popular concept of a 'debt' to be paid to society is not a concept that forms part of any common-law jurisdiction.

In societies governed by law, a specific scale of punishments is laid down for specific crimes. Once you have been sentenced, and served the time or paid the fine, the law will not inflict a further fine or custodial punishment on you for the same offence.

But thereafter society is under no obligation to treat you the same way or to regard you in the same light as it did before you committed the rape for which you were punished.

As a matter of public policy, society usually finds it better all round to try to rehabilitate criminals so far as work opportunities are concerned, and that rehabilitation may include regaining the right to vote, but there will always be limits: thus, no time-served rapist is likely to get a job in a home for girls in need of social care. And no father is obligated to let his teenage daughter date a convicted rapist, even if she pleads that 'Daddy, he has paid his debt to society." That's just baloney.

This is kinda the point ain't it?...but your conflation of private life with public life is entertaining but irrelevant, unreasonable, and illogical in this context. To the public, an unconditionally released prisoner is entitled to the same rights and pursuits as any other non-convicted person. . . Amendment 4 in Florida was intended to fight against the very disenfranchisement that you are encouraging/promoting in your post.

By your logic we should not let felons vote because they will eventually vote to make their criminal behavior legal...why would we let a law-breaker near our laws?
