I have heard of nobody who says that the government should take no interest in discouraging people from overstaying a visa. One very good way to do it would be to have every visitor to the US on a time-limited visa accompanied at all times by an ICE agent, who would immediately arrest them one minute after visa expiry. That way no-one would overstay.
Of course no-one would advocate that, because the cost would be hugely out of proportion with the benefit.. And that's the problem with running a country: you have to decide priorities.

How much money from the federal budget are you prepared to spend on pursuing visa overstayers? How will you raise that money? By raising what taxes? But cutting what programs? You will have to choose: shouting is not enough.
A lot of the cost is built in to the fees foreigners pay for a visa. Beyond that, don't give out so many visas if we can't afford it.

Several reasons why not. First, and most importantly, a standing military within the US borders with the necessary scope to maintain the approximately 2000 mile border is a fundamental threat to liberty. It's the sort of thing you only do temporarily if there is a specific existential military threat. You're proposing a police state. Because you don't like America's founding values, this probably doesn't matter that much to you, so secondarily, it's an insane expense that cannot be cost justified in any conceivable way. You get around this by retreating into fantasy about costs of illegal immigration that do not exist, so there's not too much to say. Since you aren't bound by empirical responsibility, maybe dream bigger. Why not genetically engineer sharks to swim in the Rio Grande with fricken laser beams on their head?
I wish the costs of illegal immigration were a fantasy. Perhaps it is for those who find a way around paying income tax.
