The South went to war over lockdowns?
I think you're right about slavery being the reason many southerners went to war. It was their means of making money. Generally taking peoples salaries or in old times their land is something people are willing to go to war over.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Their way of making money was to force someone else to do their work, apparently, under threat of lash or death.

And on land that they took from others, as well.

History is funny.

The war was in large part about stopping white southerners stealing the labour, freedom and in many cases the lives of black southerners. Basically the white southerners were engaged in a centuries long system of armed robbery of black people.

What's not to like about stopping that?

That would be Stonewall Jackson. During the Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) his troops held ground as if they were a "Stone Wall", and helped turn the tide for the Confederate Army. The thing I like best about Stonewall were the words he said on his deathbed:
Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees.
His last words were beautiful.

Jackson was a warrior. He had conquered his fear and that was rooted in his faith. But I'd be remiss if I didn't note that many Yankee soldiers possessed that same valor. It takes a special man that can march into gunfire, be gutshot, and have limbs chopped off. Even more special were men like my many times great grandfather who after a muzzle loader ball left his left leg useless, managed to work a physical job and earn enough money to repurchase a family farm that is still in the Ajax family. Since we're talking about American history and it's consequences, I think it's fair to point out that the government didn't do that for him. There was no monthly disability check nor free medical care, no afffirmative action progam dictating one must hire Confederate war veterans. He did it with God's help alone. And I'd like to think he smiles at my success now knowing it's more a credit to his faith and tenacity than it is mine.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

Perhaps the ruling class did. But why do you think my ancestors fought, given that they didn't own slaves?
For the same reason you'd fight for Trump for no benefit.

This truth cannot be overstated. There are people, where I live, who fly the blacked out American flag which means they’ll ‘not seek, nor give quarter to the enemy’. That flag is typically accompanied by a Trump flag, a damn Joe Biden flag, or some variation of the two. Here’s the interesting thing. These flags fly at the homes of families who own a farm, a ranch, or nothing at at all - big houses, small houses, or straight hoarder trailer trash, it’s ideological, not economical.

Also, you can buy an array of knives from the local sporting goods store for, and I crap you not, $14.88.

Dear me I do not even know what a blacked out American flag is or looks like. You are seeing horrors that my area is not showing. There are Trump supporters. One down the street likes signs but I haven't seen these extremes. You live somewhere on Wasatch front I understand. Is what you see really wide spread? Hm you already said it is in a variety of economic neighborhoods.

I moved to rural Utah because the Wasatch front’s air, social, and political issues ran their course with me. Other than the insanity of some hyperparanoid racists it’s nice to live closer to the things that interest me.

Flags like that can be seen in my rural also. Don't tread on me and all that. There's also a big sign at the end of someone's driveway that says "Trump 4 Life!"

I ask you, what does Trump 4 Life mean? Whose life? Trump's life? Huh? What?

In October, when I had to go to a resident's home to work on something art association related, I debated with myself about walking in with a mask. As I turned up the driveway (most of us have long driveways around here), the whole driveway was lined with vertical blue and white Trump banners.
