There is sometimes confusion over the difference between hate crimes and hate speech. Hate speech can be and is a crime in some countries, including Canada. If i recall correctly, Jordan Peterson's claim to fame began as a protest against a hate speech law in Canada. In some countries, blasphemy is a crime under laws that also criminalize speech.

In the U.S., "hate speech" that would be a crime under other country's laws is protected by the first amendment. If that sounds wrong, consult a librarian. https://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/hate That's a pretty good explainer of the distinction.

My bias on this issue is that of something pretty much like a first amendment absolutist when it comes to speech. I think giving the government the power to lock people up for speaking is an incredibly bad idea, except in narrow, defined circumstances. If you go back into the early days of the U.S., before the passage of the 14th amendment, you'll be stunned at what you can find state governments doing. State and local government would jail people for criticizing those in power. Anybody want to go to jail for criticizing Biden? Trump?

The line between speech and conduct is fuzzy. Under a famous Supreme Court case, nude dancing in a strip club is protected speech. I don't want government pressing at the margins, so that's just fine by me.
Interesting, RI. Thanks for sharing.

Shifting gears because now the True Crime community is blowing up all over social media like crazy. Pinging off the walls of Twitter, youtube, Facebook and wherever else. Behold the bottom feeders of the True Crime Community! One person ordered the records via FOIA and the other received screen shots of the records and both charged Patreon members to view them. These were unredacted copies of the autopsy photos. These are NOT channels that I subscribe to.

Let's take a hike to the dark side of the True Crime Community...excerpts:

Who are ZavGirl and Natasha Cooper? True crime YouTubers blasted for selling autopsy of Gannon Stauch

DENVER, COLORADO: A furious backlash has erupted against two true crime YouTubers, Zav Girl and Natasha Cooper, who allegedly charged their patrons to view gruesome autopsy photos of Gannon Stauch, an eleven-year-old murdered by his stepmother. The shocking revelation has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from social media users, who argue that exploiting such a tragedy for personal gain is deeply unethical.
Who are Zav Girl and Natasha Cooper?

Zav Girl and Natasha Cooper are YouTubers who have garnered a following by covering and discussing true crime cases for their audiences. Zav Girl, with over 92,000 subscribers, describes her channel as a platform to give victims of tragic crimes a voice when they cannot speak for themselves. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and aims to engage the community in discussions to gain new insights into human behavior. Natasha Cooper, on the other hand, has a smaller subscriber base, with around 2,000 followers. Her channel focuses on creating awareness and discussing both solved and unsolved true crime cases, welcoming "respectful differing opinions" and engaging in discussions with her viewers.

Zav Girl and Natasha Cooper have Patreon profiles where they offer exclusive content to their subscribers in exchange for a fee. However, they now face severe backlash after allegations surfaced that they utilized Gannon Stauch's autopsy photos to make money. Screenshots circulating on social media show Cooper's update on Patreon, stating that she would be live-streaming crime scene and autopsy photos of Gannon Stauch. The post indicated that only subscribers at the $3 level or above would have access to the live stream.

After all these years, you still need an English-Jersey translator?

Now Brian Entin has gotten hold of the story. Here he is interviewing Michael J. Allen, DA from El Paso County, CO. Thank God! May these two dregs of the dark underbelly of the youtube True Crime Community be dragged through the mud where everyone can see it! 3 bucks a pop to view autopsy photos of a deceased minor child, murder victim, with NO regard for the family nor the fact that these photos are probably already on the dark web.

YouTuber charged $3 for people to see gruesome autopsy photos of 11-year-old | Dan Abrams Live

Do we have any information about how they got the photos in first place? Were the unredacted photos exhibits at the trial. If so, were they sealed?

Yes, I know how they got the photos. The photos and other documents were not sealed. The one made a request to the courthouse here and the clerk released them. The photo exhibits in the trial were blurred in places such as face and private areas (partly to spare the jury from exposure to them)and the screen was at an angle so you couldn't quite make them out anyway. The unredacted photos were part of the release the one youtuber got. The other youtuber was given the pics when someone viewed them on the first channel's Patreon and slipped the the drop box link to the second youtuber who did the same thing re: Patreon.

People are referring to this as murder porn.

Picked up this comment...
They were released under 05-01 directive of the chief court justice. They were part of the trial record
So if that is the case, then CO did indeed release the records to the one youtuber. CO has no law preventing this from happening as Florida has. DeSantis signed into law what was SB404 in mid-May.
