And yes, the initial outrage is over how Zimmerman's killing of Martin was so pathetically investigated by the police. Stories like this peculate through the internet all the time. Messed up criminal justice stories from Florida is its own internet genre. The only thing strange here is just how much it was seized upon by more traditional media like cable news. It clearly was already a racial story by that point.
George Zimmerman is Not white. If this same situation had happened in California instead of Florida, then Zimmerman would have probably been convicted of involuntary manslaughter there. Yet, most of the angry demonstrations over the not guilty verdict of Zimmerman have occurred in California.

The 9-1-1 operator then asked: "OK, and this guy, is he black, white or Hispanic?", and Zimmerman answered, "He looks black."[295] The phrase, "He's got his hand in his waistband, and he's a black male" came several exchanges after that point in the conversation.[356][357]
Erik Wemple of the Washington Post wrote that NBC's alterations "would more readily paint Zimmerman as a racial profiler. In reality... Zimmerman simply answered a question... Nothing prejudicial at all in responding to such an inquiry... To portray that exchange in a way that wrongs Zimmerman is high editorial malpractice..."[295]
NBC issued an apology for "an error made in the production process that we deeply regret,"[358] but never apologized on the air.[359] The network said that the Today show and Miami edits took place in two separate incidents involving different people. A racial distinction is added in front of that in standard census categories because people of different races who are are hispanic by geography, linguistic, or cultural association share different experiences based on their ethnic appearance and what that means in the U.S.
Race and whether or not you are hispanic, in other words, are about separate things. White hispanic is a normal category that exists all over the place. That you can't see how a person could be categorized as a white hispanic because that seems absurd to you is where the racism is entering. The AP reported a news story about this on the same day that discussion thread was started. In that AP news story, the AP describes the "neighborhood watch leader" [Zimmerman] as being just "white." The AP is about as mainstream media as you can get.

Family members said 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, of Miami, was visiting his father and soon-to-be stepmother last month at their home in a gated community in the Orlando suburb Sanford. He had gone to a convenience store to buy some Skittles and was returning home when he was confronted by an armed man who was head of the local neighborhood watch.
The man hasn't been charged. His name and Martin's name were redacted in a preliminary police report.
A spokesman for the Sanford police didn't return a call Thursday.
Martin's father, Tracy, said Thursday that family members were upset that no arrest had been made in the shooting. He described the neighborhood as mixed race but his attorneys said they believed Trayvon Martin was being profiled at the time of the encounter because he was a young black man. The neighborhood watch leader is white. The attorneys also questioned why a neighborhood watch leader would carry a gun.
"He was stereotyped for some reason," attorney Ben Crump said of the victim. "Why was Trayvon suspicious? There are hundreds of children in that community."
