Gad says in the OP that Shades doesn't want to own it. I dunno why...

Well then don't you already have some techs that you trust around here?

I think that's the issue perhaps.Jersey Girl wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 5:18 amTemp. Admin. wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 5:12 amI don’t mind owning the board. The problem is, I’m not very technically savvy.

Re: Problems with the board
Well, that has been an issue. But the issue now is one of board ownership, or rather, maybe it's two issues: present content (database) ownership, and future server-space ownership. All the technical help in the world isn't going to fix those things.
What should we do about the database? Keep sending messages to the current owner asking if we can take it (and we're assuming what we can get is good), maybe send an offer -- 500$, 1000$? See if he responds? If not, do we just assume it's okay to take it and run? Personally, I don't think the domain name is a big deal at all. Who cares if the name of the board matches the domain name exactly?
And then who will own the future server space is the other question. Icarus says he'd like to take that over. Shades says he doesn't mind doing it. Well, I think this is progress, and glad everyone is speaking their mind.

Can Shades pick up the phone and call the present owner? Is that possible to do?

Please don't mistake my comments as if I think I know what's best to do. I think I understand how complicated this all is.Gadianton wrote: ↑Fri Jul 17, 2020 4:45 am
Icarus: "Steelhead said he would easily fix the issues with this forum in a day if "Keene" would hand over administrative rights. But he won't. He won't let the people involved on this forum for more than a decade do the necessary things to keep it working; things he clearly has zero interest in."
I have been given the same level of access as Keene had. If Shades approves, I can give the credentials to Steelhead and he can have at it. Or I can transfer whatever knowledge I have and then he can have at it. That level of access *might* not be enough. But Steelhead may know a great deal more than I do about phpBB.
If it wouldn't create a case of "too many cooks spoil the broth, why not roll the dice on Steelhead's offer? If he hits an obstacle, then just regroup.
Figure out the ownership issues later.
The reason I say this is because as it stands right now, and just based on what I see, not only is the board's every day functionality compromised (mods can't do jack), it doesn't look like new members can join either. The longer that goes on, I think the board simply stagnates. Based on what I've experienced on another board we were on--if that lasts too long people begin to eat their own kind.
My only immediate suggestion is let Steelhead take a crack at it.

I still can't figure out what I did to make it work for me on my computer. It doesn't work using my browser on my phone unless I use the Samsung browser for some reason. My Chrome browser on my S10 doesn't open any of the threads, only the main page. And while my posts seem to be doing OK, it is frustrating trying to decipher what other people are posting when the scripts are all jacked up from their end.
So, what's the proposal here and what are we trying to accomplish? If we're trying to migrate everything over to another new and improved message board, what would that entail in terms of uploading an existing backup to a new server? If it means getting permissions from Keene, my sense is that isn't going to happen because he's basically disappeared and/or doesn't care to respond to anyone.
If we're simply trying to get things back to normal without worrying about losing past debates, we could simply start another forum and start from scratch.
I wouldn't mind purchasing the past data to move it to a new board if that's what it takes. But I'd prefer to have regular posters with a background in IT doing the code management. Steelhead is the guy I know, but he doesn't post here much anymore and I don't know if he'd be interested in being a mod who can make necessary adjustments on the fly.

If the present situation continues, I fear that this board and all it has stood for over past years, will simply fade away into inactivity.Icarus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 4:37 amThe reason I say this is because as it stands right now, and just based on what I see, not only is the board's every day functionality compromised (mods can't do jack), it doesn't look like new members can join either. If someone can do something to change this state of affairs, they need to do it soon.

It may be the case that we just have to migrate to a newer forum, kinda like what happened to ZLMB.Chap wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 5:29 pmIf the present situation continues, I fear that this board and all it has stood for over past years, will simply fade away into inactivity.Icarus wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 4:37 amThe reason I say this is because as it stands right now, and just based on what I see, not only is the board's every day functionality compromised (mods can't do jack), it doesn't look like new members can join either. Where we at on this? I haven't seen Shades anywhere. Has he given up on this or is he just busy? Are we to suffer this three-wheeled jackwagon of a board for the duration?
