One of my closest friends is retired from the military, a former LEO and now a nurse. I worked in group homes for years before I became a nurse. I had no license and little more than CPR training (there are multiple levels to emergency aid from CPR to paramedic) and training in restraints. I faced many violent situations in those years perpetuated by people way bigger than me that had no inhibitions. I've had fire extinguishers, chairs and even old school heavy tv's thrown at me. I've been attacked with rolling pins and knives. The only time anyone got injured was when one of the residents broke a coworkers foot.
If we had even hurt, let alone killed, a resident we would be under state investigation and someone would be likely be convicted.
I get it though. Policing sucks, and they're underpaid.
Still, I'll never understand why police should be held to such a low standard.

Cops aren’t hunting black people.
Amaud Arbery's killers were former cops. They literally hunted him down and murdered him. Cops have been doing this for decades but we're only now realizing the extent of the problem thanks to the expanded access to video cameras.

Mostly with black people though. How do you explain that? How do you explain that cops pull over more black people during the day time but at night it ends up being proportionate? Because at night they can't see the color of the driver.

Fear is a huge issue for the police and fear can trigger a bad response and sometimes a terrible outcome.

I think K Graham's idea is a terrible idea. I think we should back the police, fund them well and train them well.

Anyone reading my comments here and elsewhere can easily deduce that I believe only some cops are bad, not all. But there are enough to cause serious problems and violations of civil rights. The fact that so many white people like you refuse to even acknowledge this irrefutable fact is pretty much evidence of the systemic racism I've been talking about here for years. I think we need to really up our standards when it comes to hiring cops. They need extensive training in de-escalation tactics instead of being allowed to let their egos run amuck. And they need to be held accountable for their actions. For too many decades now the police forces across the country have become accustomed to a culture of being above reproach. They act with impunity and expect to get away with it. And people like you and AM constantly make excuses for them, unless they're arresting white people. The fact is some people really have absolutely no business being cops. Why is this so hard to understand? Cops are low skilled individuals with weak training and they're all underpaid. I actually went through the training to become a cop in 2008 but decided against it half way through. They were weeding people out based on "psychological" profiles so to speak. When they asked me if I had ever done pot, I put no. Then they told me that they'd rather have a "pot head" tell the truth instead of just lying to them because I think that's what they want to hear. At that point I had to explain it was against my religion and assured them I was being honest. But what I will never forget is the initial orientation in a room with about 40 candidates and one guy talking to us as if we were getting ready to go through SEAL training. He was a real hard ass, but I understood he was just trying to thin the herd because the class was bigger than usual and they were only hiring about 8 people. Anyway, what struck me as curious is when he asked someone what they would do in certain situations which called for using a firearm. He asked where he should aim if firing on someone, and the guy responded the leg. The cop laughed and then got pissed saying you "ALWAYS AIM CENTER MASS, and if you can't do that, you don't belong here." Basically, you're always trying to kill the person, no exceptions. He was trying to see who had the balls to actually kill people, because that's who he wanted on their team. Of course, he didn't word it that way. He'd put it in the context of knowing if your partner could trust you to fire back to save his life or what not.
