Ah yes, the medieval dark ages. The pinnacle of social policy and medical science. Hopefully next pandemic, MAGA can take the role of the roaming flagellants, cleansing us of the demonic forces that are causing death. Last pandemic, MAGA had as one of their primary medical spokespersons a stripmall doctor that thought yeast infections were caused by dream demon sex, so we're partially there.ajax18 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 4:14 pmPeople didn't pick who to sacrifice during the bubonic plague. You say that you wouldn't have shut down, even if doing so would have spared 30% of the population. So, out of your wife and two kids, which one of the three would you have picked to sacrifice?
You're not going to answer this, because you're a disingenuous troll.

Imagine not understanding serfs and peasantry during the medieval era.ajax18 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 4:14 pmPeople didn't pick who to sacrifice during the bubonic plague. Re: What will Kamalanomics look like?
This has nothing to do with my question. The truth is that, if you yourself knew the spread of disease was probably going to doom your wife and kids, you'd opt for a shutdown. You didn't and don't care about COVID because you considered yourself and your family to be relatively safe. You wouldn't care about the dying 30% because you don't think that you would be impacted.ajax18 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 4:14 pmPeople didn't pick who to sacrifice during the bubonic plague. And you're wrong about the plague (but, my God, you have to know that!). People did quit work. They were quarantined. Travel was restricted. Funerals were outlawed. Public gatherings were quelled. Folks were arrested. People did care about the 30% that were dying. They absolutely wanted to protect their wives, husbands, friends, and children. They did care about larger society. I understand that even the money-grubbing optometrists closed up their shops for the greater good.
All-in-all, I think it's pretty generous to call you a disingenuous troll. The alternative explanation is that you're woefully and hopelessly ignorant. All of this is elementary school-level knowledge.

Try reading Daniel Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year (1665-66). He wrote it some years after the event, but it accurately sets out many of the ways in which the Lord Mayor of London and the City Aldermen imposed extremely strict controls, including sealing plague victims into their houses to prevent them infecting others, and forbidding movement from infected areas. They did not mess about.

Honestly I fear poverty more than death, just as I'd rather lose life or limb in battle than submit to slavery. But yes, 99.96% of us weren't impacted by COVID. Those who were at risk should have just stayed home. And we did lose an older friend and veteran in my ward. He didn't agree with the shutdowns either. This has nothing to do with my question. How did they survive? Did they go into personal debt to pay for their absence from work? I guess debt is how the Russian oligarchs obtained a supply of serfs. And you're wrong about the plague (but, my God, you have to know that!). People did quit work. They were quarantined. That's just it. The scamdemic was not for the greater good. You don't shut down an economy for a few people who are likely to be dead in a year or two anyway. It was a very bad decision that we will likely never recover from financially. My parents have lost two or three people from the vaccine. That happens when you're 80 years old. There's things that are far worse than death.I understand that even the money-grubbing optometrists closed up their shops for the greater good.
And when the Confederates saw Jackson standing fearless like a stonewall, the army of Northern Virginia took courage and drove the federal army off their land.

"Tomic says that some medical historians consider Ragusa’s quarantine edict one of the highest achievements of medieval medicine. By ordering the isolation of healthy sailors and traders for 30 days, Ragusan officials showed a remarkable understanding of incubation periods. New arrivals might not have exhibited symptoms of the plague, but they would be held long enough to determine if they were in fact disease-free."

Ajax, how much did the COVID shutdown cost you personally? It must have been a pretty significant hit from the bitterness you express when you write about it.

Actually, so many serfs died that there was a shortage of labor, once things cooled down. Consequently, they were able to get more rights from the nobility. Those who survived eventually had it better than their forbearers.
