Thanks, Molok! I will check this out.Molok wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 1:34 pmI could! If you want something to put on in the background while doing other things I'd recommend this :

But just to give you the general idea without having to listen to a 3 hour video : Ever since his days as a professor in college he has a nasty habit of treating his conjecture as established fact. Initially, it was not anything worse than an annoying habit, his "lobster metaphor" that was one of his earliest "claim to fames" is based on faulty science, but not worth getting upset over, it's used in service to a pretty basic self help message.
As time has gone on however, his habit of lying has taken him down the right wing pipeline, and his statements have gotten more extreme, to the point of walking right up to the line of eugenics, in some cases. Now his career has made him co workers with people like Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro, professional grifters.

Could we get a coffee with Kish series on Trump specifically? Typically you take a fairly middle-ground position on Mormon topics, it would be fun to see you go all in with Trump since it's a topic you're a little more heated (in a good way) about.

LOL. Um, well, I am not sure I want to attract the negative attention that would bring. I tried to be fair in my comparison of Trump and Joseph Smith. Do you think I was more heated in that (if you watched, and it is OK if you haven't thus far)?

Re: Jordan Peterson Jumps the Shark
By the way, I wanted to report back on Molok's recommended video on YouTube. It is from the Cody Showdy, which I think is a pretty good program, if a little annoying at times. Cody did demonstrate pretty clearly that Jordan Peterson is full of crap. And badly. It also helped me understand many of my dad's talking points for the past five years, which could have easily been ripped from the speeches or books of Jordan Peterson. I don't think I am left with much of a Jordan Peterson who is worth listening to, at all. The problem is that he is intellectually sloppy in the extreme and relies on concepts that don't really support his arguments. (More annoying is that he confesses his math skills are abysmal and then presumes to speak against scientific consensus that relies on, you guessed it, math.) I mostly knew him from his championing of free speech, but it also appears that he misrepresented the situation that raised his concern about that. I would recommend this program and also the recent takedowns of Bret and Eric Weinstein, two brothers who purport to be misunderstood geniuses of the Intellectual Dark Web (a term Eric coined) but who are clearly just frauds.

Several months ago, I watched videos of the course Peterson taught at University. I thought most of it was pretty interesting and informative. I learned something about several schools of psychology that I knew nothing about. I thought he was a good lecturer. However, every once in a while he would veer off into his political philosophy, which was both jarring and out of place in the course. Personally, I think he jumped the shark when he went on his anti-woke martyr crusade.

What this sounds like is an endorsement of the bulk of what was a decent undergrad course in psychology into which unfortunately extraneous material was injected because the instructor lacked discipline. It may be comparable to taking a Poli-Sci course with Lou Midgley in the 1990s.Res Ipsa wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 3:26 pmSeveral months ago, I watched videos of the course Peterson taught at University. Re: Jordan Peterson Jumps the Shark
I think that's fair. Peterson obviously had some deeply held political opinions that sometimes bled through into his lectures. He's not the first professor to do that and he won't be the last. It was pretty easy to sever the political opinions from the psychology.Kishkumen wrote: ↑Thu Oct 03, 2024 6:37 pmWhat this sounds like is an endorsement of the bulk of what was a decent undergrad course in psychology into which unfortunately extraneous material was injected because the instructor lacked discipline.
