Well, what is your point?

Well, when you take satire and claim it isn’t satire, the main takeaway should be that you’re an idiot.

Been watching CNN. Which part do you claim was unhinged? The part where Acosta asked the press secretary to explain which media outlets were the enemy of the people?

Unless you intend to out me as a Jew so that anti-semites can harass me, yes you are doing it wrong. But why hold back Dog? Why not just go full swastika?

I saw nothing but crazy right-wing elements. As the site allows up/down voting, it's unlikely to be exposed to much other than the right-wing elements since they are the majority, and down-vote. (I did see one canpakes-type poster getting away with puncturing the idiotic statements of some of the alt-righters. But no extended counter-right positions and conversations)

waterdog wrote:And how much of this is even real vs. trolling?

I'm glad you asked that, it's a good question. Take cam's football example. Actually, just this morning when chatting with the guys before work, the gym-rat sports enthusiast guy went on about some football player who ruined a game -- his team won, but by ruining some touchdown, they won only by a couple points, which screwed up something to do with the betting and a lot of people are pissed, and crass comments were made about breaking the guys legs and so on. Was this conversation inappropriate? Well, I'd say at the end of the day, no. Now, if there were lengthy examples of football players being beaten or killed by the mob, or by whoever, for making mistakes in a game, then the "trolling" and venting aspects become more serious, especially when public, and increasingly bad in proportion to the credibility the person has with others. Trolling about bombs at an airport security point. If it wasn't a real possible threat, it wouldn't be a big deal. So yes, trolling is increasingly bad to the degree it's aligned with a serious threat.

You can't compare publicly calling for Jews to be killed on the day when 11 Jews are murdered as the same kind of trolling as publicly calling for a rival quarterback to be killed as trolling during a heated game. Even if it's equally in jest by the person making the comment.

I think the answer to awful speech is more speech denouncing the awful speech, not outlawing speech certain groups don't like. Besides, I think people can see right through what a lot of these nut jobs are peddling and we don't need some net nanny telling us what to think or what we can or cannot say. Doesn't the MAD board like to ban speech it doesn't like?

I don't know what the answer is. I will say people don't see through this stuff as easily as you think. The constant onslaught of fake quotes, repeating conspiracies and so on seems to take its toll. The more obviously false some of this stuff is, the bigger the riot it is for those pushing it. I dare say that coming to align yourself with obvious lies gives one credibility within the community promoting the lies. It's kind of like having a testimony.

Water Dog wrote:The really funny thing is that it's not even satire.

"The president is quick to talk about the Germans' part in instigating the war, yet he still refuses to take any responsibility for inciting the violence that led to World War II," said Acosta. "It is obvious to everyone who watches our channel 24/7 that President Trump is the cause of every woe mankind has ever suffered, from famine and disease to war and death. And yet he stubbornly refuses to acknowledge this."

Acosta then excused himself for his customary afternoon practice of speaking encouraging words to himself in the mirror.

Lol. It takes a special kind of persecution complex to post a satire piece about the mainstream media going overboard on blaming Trump for something ridiculous and use it as an example of the mainstream media going overboard on blaming Trump for something ridiculous. It’s like we’ve reached mega-meta-snowflake-stupid-dishonest Level 11 on the 1 - 10 scale with these guys. And this snippet was posted by someone who keeps whining, “Where’s the honesty?”.

Next, Dog will probably post tweets from Trump attacking the press as proof of how the press is persecuting Trump. I can’t wait for the fun. : D

There's a phenomenon called "irony poisoning" where pretending to think awful things for kicks eventually convinces a person to believe or do those awful things. There's an argument to be made that at least part of the rise of the alt-right is a result of people cynically trolling with terrible ideas eventually convincing themselves or naïve observers who just don't get the joke.

Besides there being different levels of bad taste, trolling with different ideas does represent different levels of danger.

Remember, 4chan started out as a hotspot of "something awful" style ironic humor and has ended up a genuine haven for white supremacists.

I'm pretty sure Water Dog thought that was a legit news article when he posted it, and now he is pretending he always knew it was satire. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. I don't know what is going on in his head. He's just weird.
