A person who posts opinions that someone else dislikes is not a troll, in the sense that the word has been used in connection with Atlanticmike (who has, to judge from his disappearance now been banned or suspended). I did not agree with Atlanticmike's views, so when he made a substantive post expressing such views, I often replied with the obvious counterarguments, as is normal on a discussion board, as I do with Ajax from time to time.
However, for some considerable time AM's multiple posts and threads have not contained anything that could be discussed, but consisted almost wholly of nonsense or insults. Any there were so many of them that on some occasions when I logged in pretty well all the new threads were by him. His actions were not designed to communicate his views, but to disrupt the board and discourage and drive away other posters.
That is trolling, and it needed to be stopped if the board was not to die a slow death. Kevin, on the other hand, makes substantive posts in which he argues for his views, and does nothing to disrupt the board. He is not a troll.
Chap you need to focus…the conversation is about board behavior by individual behavior. Using folks by name individually, and their MO…is critical to the conversation and point. Folks here point out AM, Binger and others by name, I am simply countering with Trolls from the “other side” using the same exact types of arguments…lets say a social experiment. I said I would show Marcus how it works, and am doing so.

When I point out that when someone like myself wants to have a ligit discussion about topic…lets say Pakes and I on Hunter Biden, which I was enjoying…before I took a covid break…and others like Jersey Girl come in like she owns the place demanding others answer her ignorance like the red queen without research or reading up on the topic, or Dr Cam so butt hurt that he can't keep up throws a stupid meme after every time I post, of Kevin when he is active throwing a fit and calling every conservative names, lies, and attacks my faith, and schmo…throwing his funny dark jabs with no substance…etc…all are trolling, and few lending to the real conversation. Pakes, Hornor, Res, yourself, and a few others, in my opinion are not in that category…we can debate, throw our Jabs either aggressively or passively, but stay on focus as much as possible and respect each other.
You know I don’t typically talk about folks like this, and generally stay on track…so please understand why I am doing this. I am showing Marcus, as I promised, how this works. Again, first to point out these folks are trolls, secondly show how the liberal tribe pounces and gangs up on a conservative tribe member, and lastly to share my opinion that Shades was disrespected, greatly.
No, that’s not what you’re showing. You’re showing that you’d like to control a conversation, but you can’t seem to do it because ‘free speech’ allows people to respond how they want. You’re showing you’d like to have the right to control the conversation, and you’re irritated when you can’t.
The trolling conversation here has gone very, very far beyond this naïve understanding you have that trolling is expressing an unpopular opinion, and when this is pointed out, you want the conversation to go back to what you “think” you are showing, that somehow you know better than anyone else. You’re making points the way Binger used to make them, albeit calmer and without such filthy language. Congrats on finding the self control to clean that up.
And to be clear I would hate for these folks to be banned or punished…just ignored if you don’t feel like addressing them. This sums up my points on this thread.
Great. Then when others express their opinions, you’ll be able to let them do so without needing to step in and tell them to “focus”, or without needing to re-state how all the people whose way of speaking and choice of topics irritates you are really trolls. Try reading the statement Res Ipsa wrote about what is considered trolling, at the end of the rules thread. And canpakes link. Maybe now that you’re calmer you’ll see how inappropriate the vast majority of Binger’s contributions were.
