If this is a legitimate threat with someone really trying to send functioning bombs to prominent figures (lets ignore the left vs right distraction for now) via the postal service, what do you think the appropriate response would be? I get that half of this stuff is just security theater but it seems to me providing extra resources to help with quick response, aiding in investigations and whatnot might be a good idea. Particularly since it is likely that if one of these devices goes off it won't be hurting the figurehead it was sent to but instead the public at large.
There isn't evidence of someone attempting to send functioning bombs. NY Post has a detailed writeup of the bombs. They are for-sure fake. That isn't speculation any longer. There is no ignition system, or even detonation material. It's literally a halloween prop. A pipe with a clock taped to it. There is no danger whatsoever. Now, if there actually were bombs being mailed around, what is having men in fatigues holding M4s standing prominently on street corners going to do about it? Such a bomber did exist recently, in Austin, and the national guard wasn't mobilized over it. Authorities worked the evidence and tracked the wacko down quite easily. You can't argue that this is a reasonable counter-measure, even if the bombs were real. The left is forever ridiculing right-wing fears and paranoia over terrorism, building a wall, etc., and yet they deploy the national guard in response to someone's halloween prank? It's pure theater. Cuomo is using New York state resources, the effing military, to make republicans look like terrorists. I'll also add, it would be humorous to poll those national guardsmen and see which party they are predominately voting for. Imagine if Trump did such a thing. Imagine the howls. If Trump were to declare some kind of emergency, blame threats of terrorism on democrats, and then deploy the military, people would flip out. As they should. That would be very irresponsible to use the military as a political intimidation force. This crosses the line so far. I can tell you, as a veteran and still reservist, this is the kind of thing that undermines the chain of command as well. Guardsmen in NY will not be very happy about being used like this. Not what they signed up for.
