ajax, could you clarify what you mean by “ignoring”? Are you referring specifically to a lack of penalty being applied to the black kid, or the lack of widely broadcasting the incident as a means to serve a different agenda?
Neither of these stories became the focus of the national media, though both would surely be considered “newsy” in any newsroom in any other era. But this is the era of Trump, and the narrative has been set by the activist media: President Trump has swept in a wave of violence.
No other narrative will be considered.
The truth is that Trump supporters have been the victims of violence since the campaign began.
On June 3, 2016, a Washington Post headline read, “Ugly, bloody scenes in San Jose as protesters attack Trump supporters outside rally.” The article recounts that, “Protesters jumped on cars, pelted Trump supporters with eggs and water balloons, snatched signs and stole ‘Make America Great’ hats off supporters’ heads before burning the hats and snapping selfies with the charred remains. Several people were caught on camera punching Trump supporters.”

Strangely, though, these events never seem to receive the wall-to-wall coverage or launch the “national conversation” that the Smollett case did. Indeed, we would wager that few people remember the incident.
Attacks against Trump supporters are all over Twitter and Youtube and are just a Google search away. We understand the national media consider themselves this president’s opposition, but their lack of balanced coverage degrades their credibility and misinforms the public. Maybe instead of getting together to editorialize against President Trump, they could resolve to do better.

There were around 7000 recorded hate crimes in 2017 and surely more that evaded national statistics either because the perpetrators got away with it or errors in judgement categorizing them given the strict criteria.
How many of these received “wall to wall” national coverage?
Justin Smollett’s story was initially a back page story where salacious crime and TMZ intersect. It got the coverage it did because he’s a celebrity. After the hoax aspect was uncovered, it became a major national story eclipsing the coverage of many other objectively important stories including a major right-wing terrorist plot being foiled.
The latter didn’t happen because of left wing bias in the media. Quite the opposite.

A Boston Herald article, about a Washington Post article, pitching Trump supporters as the victims - and both sources claimed by many to be ‘left-leaning’, well-read ‘mainstream media’ platforms - and then with mention that these newsy items can be found virtually everywhere.

I think news outlets choose which stories to report based on the agenda they want to drive and whether the incidents support their world view. If the races were reversed, the mainstream media would be firing up ANTIFA and there would be cities being burned down in retaliation.
