George Bush pushed back on the measure for "hero" as did Trump, and admittedly the latter's was more abrasive to delicate skins.
However, my question was that the refutation of the label "hero" was reasonable in both soldiers' circumstances. I agree that we all knee jerk "hero" being applied to anyone that wears a uniform - but there is an elevation of the term when it is being applied to either Bush or McCain.
Is being captured a heroic quality? Is being shot down a heroic quality?...is protesting war heroic?
Nevertheless, the point being that dismissing the claim of "hero" in one case is being held up as repulsive but dismissing the claim in the other case is being held up altogether different.....and both without reasonable or logical justification. You provide a summary of why McCain should be considered a hero - but that is a rather subjective measure (honestly) and even if it was agreeable it does not support the condemnation of any person who disagrees with your assessment of those circumstances.
For example, you put forth that one of the justifications for "hero" is "sticking to the POW code of conduct", basically upholding the oath they swore in service....so, for you, simply obeying the rules of war is a support for "hero"...ok, but I disagree. So, which one of us is duly licensed to condemn the other for the use of the label "hero"? I mean, there are several examples of oath sworn soldiers who broke the rules and performed heroic actions in war.

But I’m having a hard time believing that you just don’t get the difference in situation between (1) a man who served and who didn’t need to refer to himself as a hero, and (2) another who ducked his call of duty 5 times and now disparages the service and honor of another man - an actual deceased veteran who did serve and suffered for it - and does so strictly for partisan political reasons. Toss in the fact that the fellow doing the criticizing is doing so because he’s a bitter, vindictive man-baby, and you should begin to understand the problem.
